IS Boxing a Substitute fo War for some fans?

Some people here scream out WAR (then their fave fighter's name).

Is boxing a substitute, for some, for war?

Many here seem to either root for, or against, a fighter based on his nationality, color, race, or religion.

Just like wars, crusades, and the like, have been fought based on some of the above.

Others proclaim that a true boxing fan will root for the best man to win, and should not care about the above parameters.

The real (boxing) "fight of the [last] century" was Louis vs Schmelling II. Probably most of the adult citizens of both countries were glued to the radios for the fight.

A sort of Prelude to War.

But is boxing a substitute for War for some people?

Putting "WAR" before a fighter name is an allusion to the University of Auburn's football team battle cry. "WAR EAGLE" was the name of the phrase.....i don't know exactly with the term permeated popular culture, but peolpe started to put "WAR" before anything they liked or supported...so that's basically where it came from. ive been hearing it on jim rome radi show for yrs, think it started there idk

sports in general isn't a substitute for war - but when you look at how people support their teams rabidly, wear their teams flags, sing battle cries, etc.....it does bear resemblence to how people represent/defend their own countries

That's waht I am talking about. remarkably similar. And both often are quite mindless. In the current debate about 2 fighters, many here seem to support their fave to an extreme. They ignore foul behavior, even against women, and blindly support him, no matter what. Not saying the other is a saint--as there are no saints.

What I have noticed on these boards is a lack of true appreciation of skill.........no Ko power= boring fighter, ring generalship=running, having no defense, thus blocking punches with your face=warrior........No Ko's or knockdowns=boring fight

                Good point.
That's part of the WAR mentality, and wanting it to be as close to that as possible.

I thought the "WAR" thing was because of Marvin Hagler and how he wears that "WAR" hat. Yes, I think that boxing is a way to relieve or, at least, reveal the racial tensions that exist between different groups.

I disagree. And we have to go to war over this.
