I was kind of hoping Cotto would be the one to retire him.

I've just heard an ESPN interview with Antonio Margarito, and they were asking him about the detached retina, and Margarito said that at the moment he's going with a doctor provided by Bob Arum, that the doctor said that he's not ready to fight yet, but that there is absolutely NO DETACHED RETINA, that he's eye is not as bad as everybody is saying in the news, and that he has no idea who said that his eye would force him to retire this year.

He also said that he already had a fight with Cotto planned for September, but that he said to Bob Arum that the doctor said that he is not ready to fight yet, but that he's sparring already, that he's already training and if he had a detached retina then he wouldn't be able to train.

Finally he said that he's not going to fight this year, so his comeback most likely would be until 2012.

The interview is in Spanish but this is more or less what he said.
