I think its safe to say that Mayorga gave himself a good showing against Cotto. He was in terrific shape and showed that he still has his chin and of course the last thing a fighter loses is his power. At his age, he seems to finally turn a corner when it comes to training and might from now on take it up a notch. Perhaps it was just getting up for the chance to fight Miguel Cotto and nobody else will motivate him to train like that again, who knows. But I'm interested in finding out again.
Who would you like Mayorga to fight next. He has alot of options since he didn't just roll over against Cotto. Here are my lists of fights, in order that I'd like to see Mayorga in. Thoughts and poll to come:
vs Mosley II--The first fight was extremely close, and if those knock downs did not happen, I think Mosley was on his was to a close loss. Mayorga was more impressive in defeat than Mosley has been. I think this fight deserves revisiting.
vs Paul Williams -- PWill is on the comeback trail. Is his chin completely shattered? Did Sergio end his once formidable chin? We don't really know until he steps in with a guy who will let the boxing world know. This fight will be high adrenaline the whole fight. Cotto fights at a controlled pace. He dictates the pace to his liking, picking his shots and combos, which of course Mayorga doesn't like. PWill doesn't fight like that and will just come forward. Does he have the confidence to stand there and absorbed Mayorga's chopping right hands?
vs El Perro -- Where is this guy at? Someone get this guy a doctored green card and back to fighting. His first fight back could be against Mayorga, where both guys idea of defense is letting their opponent wear themselves out by letting them hit their chins. This will be 6-8 rounds of nastiness
vs Canelo Alvarez -- I'm interested in this because we really don't know how tough or how good Canelo is. He is very young and hasn't really been in there with someone who's as big and more powerful. We know he's skilled, but not much else. I think if he can put away Mayorga, or at least coast to a wide UD, then he's ready for some prime, more elite fighters
vs Floyd Mayweather Jr -- This is an oddball, but its obvious that Mayweather cannot come out after all these retirements and keep up at the level he's accustomed too. What better way to exit retirement and stay busy in prep for a PacMan fight than to fight someone who is bigger, stronger and just a wild m'fer? Floyd, like Cotto love to fight in controlled manners, where they dictate the pace of the fight. Mayorga will promise to make Floyd uncomfortable and will make him open up with his shots to keep Mayorga at bay. Floyd will coast to a wide decision, but I think it'll be fun to see him against a fighter like Mayorga who'll make it interesting. Plus, Floyd being upper echelon like Cotto will ensure Mayorga will come into the ring in tip top condition.
