A man identified by witnesses as Salinas boxer Jose Celaya received a superficial wound to the head from a pellet gun Friday evening and was flown to a Bay Area hospital as a precaution.
Celaya, who won a comeback fight Sept. 16 in San Jose, was wounded shortly before 9 p.m. while visiting a friend's house on the 200 block of Carriage Drive in Salinas, witnesses said.
Celaya, 23, was conscious when emergency crews arrived. Police said one of the wounded man's acquaintances was playing with the pellet gun, which accidentally went off and hit him near the eye.
"It was an unfortunate accident," Salinas police Cmdr. Trevor Iida said.
Juan Hernandez, boxing director for Latin Sports
Group, which handles Celaya's career, said he had heard rumors about what happened and was seeking more details.
"Right now, we're obviously concerned for his well-being, and we want to find out what's going on," Hernandez said. "We're going to try to do whatever we can to make sure everything is OK."
Hernandez said he and Celaya had a phone conversation about 8 p.m. about a fight on TV. One of the boxers had fought Celaya a couple of years ago, he said.
"We were just having a fun phone call about those guys he's familiar with," Hernandez said. "It was all business."
Friday night's shooting comes one week after Celaya (27-3, 15 knockouts) beat Sean Holley in a unanimous decision after eight rounds. It was his first match after suffering an "ESPN2 Friday Night Fights" knockout loss to James "Spider" Webb on May 13 in San Jose.
