Freddie Roach - Genius or Devil?

Juan Manual Marquez is entitled to demand a third fight with the Pacman, why wouldnt he? He has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Given Freddie Roach's tactic of waiting to pick off the big names at their ripest moment id imagine the fight is a monty to go ahead. Roach need only to cast his eye over Katsidis Marquez bout in late 2010 where the Australian slugger was one kick away from finishing the mexican in the third round with a vicious left hook. If Katsidis can hit Marquez, what will Pacman do to him? Marquez is all of his 37 years of age, if your still not convinced dust off the Marquez Mayweather contest circa 2009.

Further proof of this notion is the way Roach waited several years to pick off Mosley, throw in the negotiated training session against Margerito and the manner in which he signed the Cotto fight on draconian terms. No doubt Roach will be up to his old tricks when negotiating JMM and MP.

If the contest gets off the ground it'll be grossly on Pacman's terms and another lop sided contest. None of this is Manny's fault, he is the the best offensive fighter ive seen, a thrashing machine in even the toughest judges book. The management of the Pacman is where my problem lies, it encaptualates everything that is wrong with our great sport, money over the best interest's of the boxing. When everyone is watching we need not only good fights but great fights. Saturday's nights show was neither.

So where to now? It looks like 'All roads lead to Mayweather' as the Pretty Boy has always stated and you can guarantee Roach wont get Floyd on his own terms. Is this one of the main reasons they can't come to an agreement? You might say Roach has little to do with negotiations, just as santa delivers the presents on Xmas right?

I don't see a problem with Roach picking out Pacman's opponent when their not at their best or pushing for terms that will boost pacman's chances of winning. I mean seriously, what would you do if you were pacman's coach? Roach's done an awesome job with pacman. The de la hoya fight catapaulted pacman into superstardom and Roach was the one that really pushed the fight even when pacman wasn't sure if he would take it. Since that fight Pacman's had some extraordinary wins.

After the David diaz fight pacman said he wouldn't fight at 147 because it's a step too far. Because of his coach's insistence that he fight de la hoya he's not beat the toughest guys in the sport most of whom are welterweights. That's a pretty awesome coach.

Did everybody say marquez was too "old" and couldn't put on the weight and be successful? Styles make fights. Theres a reason Morales could be competitive with Maidana but would get smashed by Khan. It's the styles.

Marquez is a counter punch, of course he's going to lose to a bigger better faster defensive fighter like Floyd. But Manny plays right into his style EACH AND EVERY TIME!

It wouldn't be cherry pickin'. Marquez is gonna whoop that ass again.

Roach wanted Marquez instead of Mosley for the last fight. He has little involvement in negotiations, other than Bob Arum asking him for some input (like if Manny's capable of fighting DLH at 147). Otherwise, it's Bob making his list of selected opponents, discussing them with Koncz, and having Manny pick the "best" deal.

That comes back to the title of the thread genius or devil? For manny he has been extraordinary and i'm sure that is all he judges his performance on. But sometimes when you are the best you have the onus on you to not only look after yourself but look after the sport and i'm not sure Roach is doing that. You guys might say who cares, but i think this issue is bigger than an anti pacman or pro pacman arguement here. Saturday was supposedly the biggest fight of the year (argueably) and it was a woeful spectacle. If i was new to boxing and bought the PPV i wouldnt be rushing back to buy another.
