Make boxing safer by using head-gear and heavy gloves

Why not require head-gear and heavier gloves to professional boxing, as they do in amateur boxing?

This will give an edge to boxers who have skills, but will make things a lot safer.

    headgear, NO
heavier gloves, DEFINITELY, 12 oz minimum under 154, 14 oz minimum 154+

I think the "skunk rule", like the one in the amateur game, would be good for the pro game (ex. up by 7 rounds and outlanding the opponent by 20+ punches/round, fight is stopped)

The come from behind victory is one of the things that makes boxing such a great sport though. You'll never see a baseball game where Team A is kickiing the **** out of Team B only to have Team B score a victory in the last minute.

Heavier gloves and headgear will not prevent brain clots and pugilistic dementia. They will lesson the chance of cuts and broken noses though.

        This is absolutely CORRECT.

In fact.....headgear & larger gloves may PROLONG fights, & increase the number of blows a fighter receives.

Not many fights that have ended tragically, end in the early rounds or by one punch.

Listen, i understand people are upset about the LJ tragedy, but headgear and heavier gloves is not what boxing needs.

If you keep adding **** like that, boxing becomes more of a game and I sure as hell ain't paying 50 bucks to watch to people pitty pat each other.

          Boxing is a man's sport, there's blood, there's violence.

Hey I've got an idea, why not make punching illegal in boxing? Judge the winner by how well they move in the ring and leave it up to a pannel to say who would have won if someone had thrown a punch.

I mean come on guys, boxing is as safe as it needs to be, someone people get dealt bad hands sometimes. Sorry, but it happens, nothing is ever 100% safe.

Head gear in professional boxing? Who would pay to see that. Boxing is entertainment first, sport second, lets get that clear.

              ====================

Go watch amateur boxing. They're dying since implementing those rules. Don't watch Nascar or football either.

Heavier gloves will lead to more serious injuries and headgear reduces vision.

Is there data to show that headgear is more/less harmfull to a fighter?

I suppose we can only rely on opinions of professionals.
