After being inactive in boxing for a year, undefeated and controversial boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. lost his ranking in The Ring Magazine’s pound-for-pound list.
Based on the magazine's policies, ranking pound-for-pound boxers who fail to fight for a whole year are automatically removed from the list.
Mayweather's last fight was against Shane Mosley on May 1, 2010.
Ring Magazine's editor-in-chief Nigel Collins said Mayweather's exclusion from the rankings is not related to the boxer's ability.
“The removal of Floyd Mayweather, who has not fought since May 1, 2010, and has no bout currently scheduled, is not a reflection of Mayweather’s ability,” said Collins in RingTV.com.
The uncertainty in Mayweather’s plans to resume his boxing career was also factored in his exclusion from the rankings.
“To keep him ranked at the expense of active fighters is unfair, especially as we have no idea if or when Mayweather will fight again,” Collins said.
Collins said Mayweather's status in the magazine's rankings will be reviewed if he fights again.
“If he returns to action, Mayweather’s status will be re-evaluated,” he said.
