Well, like I said, the footage was from '86.
It was one of Cus' dying wishes to have Mike become a more complete fighter. I guess this was Rooney's way of attempting to fullfill that wish.
But, the marketing boys infiltrated Catskills, & cut that **** short. They knew Mike was a cash-cow only if he remained a slugger.
