    A burning question

The Vargas/Trinidad thread got me thinking Is it better to baby your fighter through week compitition to a belt (Alvarez, Chavez Jr, Berto), or is it better to throw them in tough (Holyfield, Vargas, Jones, Davey Moore)? Thoughts??

A nice mix of both. U can't just baby a fighter the way they do it now, or be ready when they get "berto'd" . But u also don't wanna throw him too many brutal fights in a row. Even if he's winning, it can't be a super bowl type fight every time out. Dudes need a soft touch every now and then, just not every time out.

It comes down to the fighter. A guy like Holyfield who had the great amateur pedigree and maturity was able to fight at an advanced level as a professional early on.

Someone like Canelo Alvarez, who is still a vulnerable fighter learning on the job, is not someone to throw in against Cotto or Margarito yet.

Some guys come up hard in the ranks simply because they don't have the proper management to advocate for their interests, and they wind up taking fights just for the money.

David Reid was a guy who was rushed into big fights because he had an eye injury and a small window to make money.

A lot of what determines a fighter's success takes place in the gym and at home. A fighter has to be living the life, and that means being a gym rat and living clean.

A fighter's ability to successfully step up in competition is contingent upon his ability to make the necessary lifestyle adjustments needed to compete on that level.

        i agree with this.
but rather than just getting the belt, you also gotta be ready for the defenses, and thats what being in tough fights gets you ready for.

        oh and LOL @ berto'd

I dont think any fighter should be babied to a title. Some fighters have been through many top contenders won/lost and still havn't won a world title and only had a few title oportunites. Then you see a guy like Saul Alvarez get pretty much handed a title.
I don't think they should be thrown in the deep end too soon either, some fighters can take it but alot of the young fighters simple arn't battle hardened enough yet to go through that so they have to gradually step up their opponents each time.
