good for him to keep the same trainer. with the same trainer, they know your tendencies and know how you work, so its good to keep them. but also a new assistant could help. but in boxing, there are so many factors that you can blame a loss on. i think sometimes the trainer is a scapegoat let go, just to have someone to blame.

Good to see Pavlik is not so quick to turn his back on the people who helped him become middle weight champ. No shame in losing to the fighters he lost to, and Im looking forward to seeing how he performs clean and sober. It makes a big difference.

There is no way he goes undisputed at 168. Even Arthur Abraham has more tricks in the bag. Pavlik just doesn't have the balance and the base to be a tough kind of fighter.

I like Pavlik but he really needs to work on his foot-work. His flat-footedness has cost him his 2 losses; Martinez and Hopkins exposed that and fighters such as Bute and especially Ward would further expose this fact !!!!

Changing trainers wouldn't suddenly give Pavlik quick feet and masterful defense. He has strengths and weaknesses like any other fighter. The goal of a trainer is to get the most out of his fighter, and I think Loew has done a pretty good job even though he isn't a boxing mind like Roach, Steward, etc. It's also important for a fighter to trust his trainer, and clearly Pavlik trusts Loew.

Loew hinted in the article, correctly in my opinion, that other people are more to blame for Pavlik's setbacks than him. Top Rank had Pavlik move up 10 lbs to fight a supposedly shot Bernard Hopkins... it was a terrible match-up with no titles at stake, and it never should have happened. He should have fought Abraham, who he would have exposed like Froch did. Presumably he still would have lost to Martinez but Pavlik's overall situation would have been much better.

Anyway, he has good potential at 168. The only horrible match-up would be Ward, though Pavlik would have a puncher's chance given Ward's chin. Bute is better but can be outworked and is vulnerable to right hands. Who knows what Dirrell is up to. Froch is even slower than Pavlik. Abraham has been totally exposed. Kessler isn't what he was, though that would an interesting fight.

When he fought B-Hop. Jack Loew said something like: 'we gotta hit him more, that's what Calzaghe did'....

...that's the trainer of the year...

It was a horrible match-up against Hopkins. Saw how slow he was against Taylor. Loew should have just waited and let Pavlik fight someone else.

Best of luck though, really like Pavlik and it would be great to see him in there with Froch/super six.

The fight was even going into the 10th round and Martinez took over from there.
He was behind early, showed no signs of improvement whatsoever, in fact at one stage it actually started to look like the Hopkins fight all over again.

He was behind the 8-ball, forced to play catch-up, he could not close the show and ended up getting out-punched by a blown up JMW.

He has regressed since the second Taylor fight imho.

Well, that is a very good point man, absolutely 100% correct, but I just wonder if Kelly's trust is not a little misplaced, friendship's can cloud your judgement, and I also wonder if Loew is even aware of exactly what Pavlik needs right now.

Pavlik shouldn't waste his time with Loew, as he's already proven to be incapable of understanding the nuances of boxing and at no time has he developed a game plan beyond the basic a-b strategy.
