With only 8 amateur fights he has a long way to go and needs to matched carefully. Hard to imagine anyone with just a little amateur background going far these days.

Yeah I noticed him completely whiffing on like 90% of his uppercuts lol. I wanted him to land one so bad because they looked vicious and probably woulda sparked the other guy out but alas, his timing and accuracy on them were terrible.

The guy he fought was nothing. I like to see what he can do against someone with a winning record.

I covered Rooney Jr.'s Golden Gloves match earlier this year for the New York Daily News and here is what I wrote.

Kevin Rooney Jr. (Main St. BC) of Eastchester, NY unloaded everything he had left in storage in the third and final round of his 165 pound novice Daily News Golden Gloves match against Jeremy Humphrey (Gleason's Gym) of Jamaica, Queens but it was a case of too little, too late. Humphrey was awarded the decision after surviving a very difficult challenge from the 26-year-old Rooney.

Rooney, the son of former Golden Gloves champion Rooney Sr. and more famously the first professional trainer of Mike Tyson, looked for the perfect punch the whole night and was outhustled by the quicker Humphrey in the process until an uppercut followed by a left hook left Humphrey dazed and out of steam.

"I wasn't tired, I was just dazed by that uppercut," admitted Humphrey, 22, who is a deacon at Urban Ministries in Jamaica. "It happens. I was very happy to get out of that round.

Rooney did himself no favors by following Humphrey around, walking towards his opponent without a jab and getting hit on the way in.

Humphrey used his jab to set up multiple punch combinations, most of which were blocked but created the impression that one guy was pumping on all cylinders.

"After the first round after I saw he didn't have a jab to come in and I picked him apart from there."

For his experience and lack of an amateur background, he is decent. He will get killed when he steps up because he is a square...literally, he squares up and walks into the opponents, at least that's what I saw last night. He needs a new trainer or something...my 2 cents but that don't count for much, lol

People need to listen to you, no amateur background is so detrimental. That is why I'm so high on Martinez, dude has done what he has with NO amateur experience at all...that says a ton.

Rooney Sr. was actually a decent boxer in his time. He had a good fight with Davey Moore, where he won all the early rounds but was stopped by a far bigger and more powerful Moore. He boiled down to 140, and walked into the best 1-2 combination Arguello ever threw.
