Instead of regressing defensively as he moved up in weigh, he actually has gotten better due fighting more cautiously than he was at the lower weights.

            HBO PPV: Ortiz vs. Mayweather
            9/17/11 - Las Vegas, NV

            Victor Ortiz vs. Floyd Mayweather
            BTOT | Comparison Report | Personal Bests | Plus/Minus List | Mayweather Plus/Minus

The bout between Victor Ortiz and Floyd Mayweather Jr. is rich with story lines. For Ortiz, it's his chance to become a crossover superstar while burying the memories of his disheartening KO loss to Marcos Maidana. For Mayweather, this fight may produce the definitive preamble to the Pacquiao showdown, for Ortiz shares Pacquiao's left-handedness and sudden one-punch KO power. Mayweather is a better than 6 1/2-1 favorite.

Will fans witness the birth of a new PPV money machine and the end of Mayweather's perfect record or will they see another exhibition of "Money's" exquisite skills? Their CompuBox histories offer these potential factors:

"Bringing It Up From the Gut": That's what Sugar Ray Leonard said he did when rallying to stop Thomas Hearns in 1981 and on a smaller scale Ortiz did the same in dethroning Berto. "Vicious Victor" fought like a man possessed, dropping Berto in the first, rising from knockdowns in rounds two and six and absorbing a point penalty for rabbit punching in the 10th to win a well-received decision.

Fueled with ambition and hungering for redemption, Ortiz cranked up his output while enhancing his accuracy. Against Berto, who shares stylistic elements with Mayweather but doesn't execute nearly as well, Ortiz threw 58 punches per round and landed 40.4 percent, 22 percent more punches (45.7) and 43 percent more accurate (23.3) than his three-fight averages against Nate Campbell, Vivian Harris and Lamont Peterson.

His drive to succeed also affected his punch selection. In his previous three fights 66.7 percent of his punches (30.5 of 45.7) were power shots and he connected at a 32.4 percent rate (slightly below the 36.0 140-pound norm). Against Berto, 81.8 percent (47.5 of 58.0) were either hooks, crosses or uppercuts and he landed 46.7 percent of them, significantly above the 39.1 percent welterweight average.

Ortiz's best chance is to duplicate that blueprint: Seize the initiative and force a firefight to keep Mayweather overly focused on defense. One sobering note: Although Berto was out-landed 266-115 in power shots, he landed 45.8 percent of them. Against Mayweather, who landed a combined 46.8 percent of his power shots against Hatton, Marquez and Mosley, this could be disastrous. Yet boxing cautiously would be even more so.

Mayweather versus southpaws: Ortiz is the first lefty Mayweather has faced since back-to-back fights against Sharmba Mitchell (November 2005) and Zab Judah (April 2006). Throwing in his May 2004 fight against DeMarcus Corley, Mayweather has proved himself fluent in solving the southpaw puzzle.

The three-fight averages show Mayweather threw 42.1 punches per round and landed at 45.4 percent, 12 jabs and 33.4 percent marksmanship and 30.1 power shots and 50.2 percent accuracy -- impressive given the trio's defense-oriented styles. They, in turn, launched 47.2 punches per round but only 19.1 percent of their overall punches got through -- a mammoth plus-26.3 gap.

Since fighting Corley, Mayweather faced seven right-handers and the numbers aren't dramatically different. His 41.3 output was slightly lower but his accuracy was better (jabs -- 42.4 percent to 33.4 and 52.4 percent to 50.2 in power punches) and his overall defense tighter (right-handers 16.8 percent, southpaws 19.1 percent). One hope for Ortiz: The southpaws' jabs penetrated at a higher rate (13.9 percent to 10.4) as did their power punches (27.3 percent to 18.8).

More Rust-Proof than Rust-O-Leum: To this point, long layoffs have meant nothing to Mayweather. Twenty-one months after stopping Hatton, Mayweather landed 59 percent of his punches across the board against Marquez while holding him to 12 percent overall accuracy. The raw connect numbers -- 290-69 (overall), 185-21 (jabs) and 105-48 (power) -- were astounding. After taking 20 more months off, Mayweather skewered Mosley to the tune of 44 percent overall accuracy on offense while tasting 20 percent of Mosley's fire. He out-landed Mosley 208-92 (overall), 85-46 (jabs) and 123-46 (power), all while averaging just 39.8 punches per round.

Prediction: Ortiz is 10 years younger and riding the momentum of his biggest win. But can he handle the pressure of an elite-level fight and all the outside stresses? For Mayweather, they are old hat and it helps that the fight is in his adopted hometown of Las Vegas, where he has fought his last six fights.

Despite his high output against Berto, fighters revert to old habits under stress and Ortiz's history suggests a slow-running motor. This will give Mayweather time to think -- and his brain is an even bigger weapon than his fists. Mayweather will absorb Ortiz's opening rushes, make the proper strategic adjustments and pull away to a decisive victory.
