How much does a Trilogy take from a fighter?

I was thinking about Marquez, Vasquez, Barrera, & Morales and there's an obvious difference between who they were before and after their legendary fights. As good as Barrera and Morales looked after their encounters, they were nothing compared to the monsters they once were. Vasquez and Marquez seem to be shadows of their former selves.

can't imagine how their career would have gone without those wars, but then again they did give us some of the best fights in boxing history.

It takes about three fights out of their careers.... basically.

My thoughts on this have always been more or less the same. Even the best fighters only have so many big fights in them, and while some guys have been able to defy the odds, there's a pretty clearly defined ball park of how many times a guy can produce at the absolute top level before he starts to decline.

That said, there's an intangible element that comes with being a champion whether it be past or current that will always give certain guys the capability of doing amazing things in the right situations.
