Why doesn't Andre Berto get penalized....

i understand that too. but berto was still punching. it wasnt like he was holding on for dear life. to me, thats not excessive. and he was definitely still getting hit. it was smart holding, nothing excessive to me.Comment

in my honest opinion, berto should've been penalized twice for excessive holding, that was ridiculous, berto put the X in excess in holding that fight.
i was saying all fight long watching with my friends that if berto isnt allowed to hold on , he will get knocked out, but berto was allowed to excessively hold all fight long.
we see it all the time, fighters relying on holding and once they're are NOT allowed to hold anymore, they get stopped. I was waiting for that moment to come along in that fight and the ref never made it happen, letting berto hold on for dear life.
i was rooting for berto at the beginning of the fight, and then was like, he needs to quit holding and just get knocked the F out already.............
either way, poor ref job in that regard, but a good showing by ortiz..... if berto was forced to not hold he would've been stopped within the distance.Comment

yea its true. the funny thing is larry merchant, who is known for detesting things like excessive holding, was commenting on how the ref was interjecting himself in the fight unnecessarily. there was some truth to it, they were clearly fighting their way outta the clinches and ortiz was doing some good work on the inside. berto was getting hit.Comment

In all honesty I think berto was holding because Ortiz wouldn't let him fight on the outside. Ortiz kept closing the distance because he was the better in fighter which caused most of the holding.Comment

excessive holding? if thats excessive holding to you then some of the boxers are grappling, try and watch some of hopkins fights or ali's. holding is tactic, its part of what they said boxing is "hit and not get hit", punch the other guy then wrap your arms around him so he cannot punch back. hold him to a position he cannot retaliate, then position yourself or be ready to punch him again seconds after you release them.Comment
