This is one of the main reason's why i feel athletes shouldn't be looked at as role models. Sure they're great at what the do in their respective sports, but outside of that their still human beings with flaws, in this case serious flaws. I respect Valero for what he could have been in the ring, but not for what he was outside of it.
We all grew up admiring someone and wanting to be like them, when they did something wrong, it affected us.
The reality is, they are role models whether we like to admit it or not, that's why they do have a responsibility to the people that are their fans.Comment

Naive way to look at it. You cannot expect children and teenagers to look at their sports idols and not see them as role models, impossible.

People might want to be like Mayweather and Kobe, but they are not role models in my opinion their just masters of their craft.Comment

Those who were upset by Valero killing himself, would you feel the same about someone who wasn't a boxer/celebrity? Or would you feel like most and call him the sick b*stard that he was?Comment

Really though, what have these men done to deserve to be looked up to as a person, sure children can say they wanna be like Mike, but again these guys are not role models, they're athletes. They're ment to be looked up at as athletes but not as a role model to live your life by because outside of the sport they have mastered they might not be good people.

I grew up as a teenager in the 80's, Michael Jordan was bigger than life man, everyone wanted to play like him , be like him and dress like him.
If he came out with a shoe, everyone had to get it. If he wore a certain type of clothing, you would see kids do the same and if he did something against the law or outside of basketball, that was imitated as well.
Hero's are put up on a pedestal because of what they do in the sports world but also because of the amount of attention we give them. Now more than ever with all the media we have that we didn't have 20 years ago.
These guys are hero's, role models whether they like it or not. Think about how heated this place gets when Pac fans and Mayweather fans go at it....you think they aren't seen as role models? Come on..........Comment
