                He never got the chance to beat the best, but judging from his performances against the semi-elite fighters (Pitalua, Whyber, Mosquera, DeMarco), he def COULD have beaten or stood a chance against JMM or anyone else in the division.

                  I think the thread starter should've ask "If Valera was still alive and never murdered his wife?" because if valera was alive, he would've gotten the death penalty or life in prison and still would do nothing in boxing.
