  • The cold metal device cutmen use for swelling

I made this thread because I read this:
Morales’ eye damage got significantly worse as the fight progressed. There was nothing his cut man can do about it particularly after his poor efforts of “pushing” the swelling with that ice cold-devised in an effort to perhaps spread it around the surrounding tissues. A poor technique to say the least.

Do you think pushing that device into a swollen area makes it worse? I remember hearing from someone that a lot of cutmen use this device incorrectly and that your not supposed to push it but simply apply it to the effected area so the cold will reduce swelling and that pushing it can actually make matters worse.

    Thoughts?

I heard the same thing...I remember Emanuel Steward saying the same thing....your suppose to "push down" on the swollen area....if you press the swollen area away from the eyes (which is what alot of cutment do) then your acutally making the swelling worse.

        I found this on boxrec:
An enswell (sometimes called an "end-swell") is a small piece of metal used by a second, corner or cutman to apply pressure to an injury to reduce swelling. An enswell may be solid metal (usually stainless steel) and kept cool within icewater, or may be constructed with a hollow chamber to hold water and pre-frozen or filled with ice. Proper use of the enswell is to apply light pressure and hold the tissue in normal position, as the cold slightly constricts the capillaries to reduce ancillary swelling. Excessive pressure, or attempts to "iron out" a bruise, will only damage tissue further and exacerbate the bruise or contusion.

        http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/Enswell

Both in the Morales and Vargas fights, the cutman was applying excessive pressure.

I think it's very possible that this is the reason their eyes swole as badly as they did. If you recall Morales eye was shut but not nearly as bad as it got later in the fight.

Just something to think about and how important a good cutman is. These guys are not doctors and I believe in many cases they simply don't understand fully what they are doing.

All cutmen should know how to do this...

Morales would have won the fight.

i read or heard someone explain it that the cold metal press works great.
but not on the injures morales, rahman and the others had.
i think they call those, i'm going to butcher this word, hematoses.
            supposedly they actualy don't hurt.

I thought you were suppose to apply pressure?

I remember when i trained at my gym that many guys after sparring, mostly new guys, whos faces werent accustomed to getting hit, would apply it with pressure to prevent black eyes and bruising

In think injuries like morales and Vargas eyes pressure or not they were going to be next to impossible to control. But I would def agree with you a cutman who doesn't know what they're doing can definitely exacerbate the problem.

Swelling is usually associated with facial hematomas (commonly called a mouse), and is traditionally reduced by applying firm pressure with a chilled enswell or an ice bag on top of the area of trauma.[3] Since the time between rounds is very short, cutmen try to apply the enswell right away and hold it as long as they can. A common mistake is to use the enswell to push on the swollen area in an attempt to disperse it or move it into a safer place such as away from the eye.[4] Such treatment will not move the hematoma, and may disrupt the microscopic blood vessels under the skin thus causing an increase in bleeding and *********** of the swelled area[citation needed].

Now I'm not expert, but I think what fightfan_79 said is right that you apply it directly on it. If you recall between rounds, Morales' cutman was pushing down, then moving away from the eye rapidly while still pressing down. It seems logical to me that this would make it worse and actually spread the swelling.
the mistake of letting a boxer blow his nose when he has a mouse...

Honestly, it would seem like common sense that aggravating an injury would cause it to swell more. Why would you push down on a bruise or a swollen injury? Especially with a hard object? I would think that just applying something cold would cause the swelling to go down. Not raking it across the injury.
