basically boxing is not a mainstream sport like the NBA NFL MLB, so most black youth like myself rather play ball and have a better chance at making big bucks as to where in boxing only a handful of black fighers are making good money. Shooting hoops and swinging bats and breaking tackles is fun as to where in boxing to the avg athlethe isnt, who likes to get hit in the head for money because statistics show only 5 percent of all boxers in the world make good money. if all blacks that are in all major sports rite now would have chose boxing from the begining, filipinos would not have a hero rite now plain and simple just like all other major american sports blacks dominate, its just that the avg black man is not interested in boxing

Blacks, like most Americans, are not fans of boxing. They are football/basketball/baseball fans like every other American. Boxing is not a top sport in America. I don't think some of the foreigners on this site understand that boxing gets no press at all. It is never on the news, never in the newspapers, nobody follows boxing in America. If it wasn't for avenues like the internet and Boxing Scene, we would literally have no boxing talk in America at all.

Boxing used to be very popular in the U.S. but since the early-mid 90s it's become more of a niche sport. It left the networks (last fight was on CBS in '97, a Hopkins fight) and that's HUGE in terms of affecting popularity and visibility. Can you imagine if the NFL wasn't on Fox, CBS, NBC and was relegated to only ESPN or HBO? It wouldn't be a fraction as popular as it is now. That's why I hope Top Rank's CBS partnership leads to Boxing being back on the network long term, which I think will happen.

Someone else brought up the fact that most big fights are limited to Vegas. I think that takes the sport even further into niche territory. It's important for fighters to build their support base like King did for Alexander in St. Louis. It's a great idea to have fights take place in stadiums and having lower prices because it makes the sport more accessible and casts a larger net.

Is Peterson the new Hopkins now? Reason why black fighters like you get no support from other black fighters (or anyone else) is because all your fights are boring and no one has the desire to watch you. You're NOT a draw. At least do what Floyd did.....he's boring to watch but at least he has charisma that helped make him a draw.

i don't think so...pretensions are only temporary. your true color will eventually come out. there have been a lot of threads with racial undertones in this board and that's when you will notice how the pride comes out.

Another part of the problem is superstar fighters like Manny and Floyd won't give these up and coming black fighters the same opportunity they were given.Would Floyd be as big without his victory over De La Hoya and Gotti? Who really followed Manny until he beat Barrera? If Floyd was to fight Berto and Berto gave him a hell of a fight, win or lose the world would know who he was and he would gain alot of supporters. How about if Manny fought Tim Bradley?Their styles would create fireworks. Afterwards the world would know who Bradley is and he would get many new followers. But the superstars of today avoid talented young black fighters. That's why i loved Oscar De La Hoya. He didn't win alot of the big fights, but he fought the best. Pernell Whitaker, Shane Mosley, Floyd Mayweather, and even Ike Quartey were not selling out arenas when he fought them. But,they were considered the best when he fought them and made them household names. That's what helps out fighters as well as boxing itself.

easy, because it always has and proly always will. did u take a look at the last census? in america race has always be institutionalized. mebbe it'll change one day, but not anytime soon.

are you serious? america is THE MOST RACIAL TOLERANT, MOST DIVERSE place in the world? what can a black guy, an asian guy, etc. do that a white guy can't do in america? NOT A DAMN THING. in america, you truly make your own path. of course everyone is subject to whim and circumstance, regardless of race, socio-economic background, etc. but race is no longer a boundary in america. my law school is sooo diverse - all kinds of kids get to go there for free.
