I always like to see a fighter take a loss like a man rather than *****ing and coming out with the usual "I don't want to make any excuses, but..." crap. Lemieux is only young and I'm sure he will come back an improved fighter.
David is a fighter who is both young and talented, and this loss could be both good and bad for him. Good in the sense that he could very well come back stronger in the future, and bad because his trainer will not be doing him any favors in the future if everytime he gets in a tough position he is throwing in the towel. He could have very well have weathered the storm on this one but he nor we will ever know. That is the dangerous part of this sport and I'm not saying that he should endure unneccessary punishment. But at some point, if his team expects to keep stepping him up in the future, then he should be facing guys better then Rubio (no offense) -another towel from his trainer could be devestating for his upcoming future career.
I agree. I think his trainer is too emotionally attached to Lemieux. This is the first fight Lemieux was taking shots and his trainer pannicked and acted a little too soon. I do feel if Lemieux cound have made it thru the round, he might have been able to come back. His trainer never gave him a chance to test his intestinal fortitude. Also, his trainer made the mistake of saying "I made the decision to stop the fight because Lemieux was taking way too many shots and EVEN if he came back, I didn't want him taking those kinds of punches!" IMHO, Lemieux should think about getting a new trainer...

I'm with you Slugger. And it seemed to me that the punches that Lemieux was taking from Rubio weren't even really flush shots - could you imagine David in there with Bute or Martinez? When I think of trainers throwing in the towel I think of McGirt with Gatti or Corrales... but those were all out wars. This is the fight game, of course he should avoid trying to get hit but even the best fighters do. If his trainer was that concerned about him last night, I can't see him staying in there and uping the competition because he's going to take more punishment then he did last night against better competitors. And if he's just going to continue on against subpar competition in the future because they don't want him to get hurt, then he might as well get out of the game now. As I said before his trainer didn't do him any favors last night, and I have to wonder how much psycological damage this might do to David in the future. You are right though, he should consider changing trainers, but if he agrees with what he did then he should just get out now IMO. Last night was his first big step up in competition and already his trainer was waving the white flag.
Lemieux is all offence and at the upper level his D needs help , but his chin has been exposed and we might see harder fights for him at the club fight level.
