Erik Morales' father won't train his son for a rematch on Jan. 21 against Manny Pacquiao, promoter Bob Arum said.
Jose Morales is out after Zahir Raheem's upset last Saturday of Morales in Los Angeles, said Arum, who disclosed the move after he arrived this week in Phoenix for tonight's card featuring Julio Cesar Chavez at America West Arena.
Arum said a leading trainer would work with Morales, but he didn't identify candidates.
The shuffle coincides with Arum's argument that Phoenix middleweight Jesus Gonzales needs a major trainer.
Gonzales' dad, Ernie, will be in his son's corner tonight at America West against Jose Luis Zertuche.
The debate about fathers and sons is about as long as boxing itself. The theory is that fathers have a tough time being honest with their sons, especially in a close fight.
