I guess boxing is a sport black Americans have dominated to a certain degree. I can imagine as a minority in the US that they have taken a lot of pride in that over the years and would like it to continue, hence the NSB clashing after a Euro win.

Generally though, I think US boxing seems different to elsewhere. Other nations for the most part get behind all their fighters pretty much regardless of race but US fans tend to get behind fighters from the same ethnicity/heritage and that includes mexican-americans, pr-american, irish-american, african-american etc and their respective boxers.
