I'm unaware of any purely biographical Ali documentaries. Most films feature Muhammad as a main character within a larger picture. One of the best already mentioned is "When We Were Kings," about the 1974 "Rumble in the Jungle" versus George Foreman.
A great, rarely mentioned documentary is "The Last Round - Chuvalo Vs. Ali." George Chuvalo is one of the toughest men I've ever known of. He was unbelievably tough as a boxer, but even tougher as a human being. Three of Chuvalo's four sons became heavily addicted to drugs. Two of them died from overdoses. George's wife committed suicide as a result. That Chuvalo is able to carry on is incredible. That he's still an articulate, charismatic speaker, after so many ring wars, is a miracle.
"The Last Round" (available on DVD) is indispensable to Muhammad Ali fans. It's well produced. There's plenty of vintage Ali footage, both in and out of the ring. The film uses the meeting between Chuvalo and Ali as a backdrop to focus on George's life, while giving a great degree of attention to Ali. (Really, most people would ignore the product if Ali wasn't associated with it.) It's definitely worth a look!Last edited by CubanGuyNYC; 04-01-2011, 10:58 PM.Comment
