  • What could have been an (almost) classic fight...

Two novice British Super Middleweights go at it: Dan Guthrie (2 wins, 1 draw going in) and Paulie Da Silva (1 win, two points losses going in).

I wish I'd taped this ****er now. Guthrie tags Da Silva with an almost-KO punch in the first round, and Da Silva hangs on the ropes totally out of it, but not down - allowing Guthrie to hit him with three more flush shots.

Da Silva goes down but gets up around eight, his eyes totally glazed - I'm sure at least 60% of refs would have called it off there and then, esp. as Da Silva met the instruction "walk towards me" with a staggering sleepwalk and then couldn't do anything but cover up for the final thirty seconds of the round.

Round Two... and Guthrie gets tagged! Da Silva steams in, though the end of the round is approaching, and Guthrie is hanging on... and the ref stops it?????

This could have been a ***** fight. But it was stopped WAY too early.

I appreciate the majority won't be interesting in domestic fighters they've never heard of... but I'd never seen before either. Cracking fight, could have been so much more...

The Vargas Vs Winky Wright fight, close fight, Vargas won, it would be memorable and great if Wright was more popular back then, Is this a good candidate?

I consider it a classic, 2 different styles , the boxer vs the outclassed puncher, When the boxer thought he won the fight secure, the decision was handed towards the other fighters side. It was one of the biggest controversies in boxing history. This fight made it in the Legendary Night Hbo boxing series.

i disagree. it should have been a classic with knockdowns , speed from DLH , power from tito .

oscar game plan was brilliant , but the fight itself didnt live up to the hype , just proved DLH had conditionning problems and TITO was one dimensional .

hopkins used that info very very well

Do you remember the fight Mark Prince had before challenging DM for the WBO LH title? It was one of the best i've seen and Prince was supposed to win easy but got bashed around the ring until landing a KO cracker.
Sometimes some small hall domestic fights turn into classics but never recieve the acclaim because there is limited coverage and titles involved.
Oh, I thought Tito / De La Hoya was crap and something about the way Oscar fights garanteed that!

In IWATCHBOXING's list of great Puerto Ricans, I'd put Esteban de Jesus two rungs higher (just below Battling Torres). He fought in the much more competitive era of his weight classes, I think.

And, I'd rather have Laporte in there than Ruiz.
