Typical Top Rank approach. Keep milking them while they are on contract and use each other as a playing card just in case they want to leave Top Rank and they might miss out on a big money match-up.
In order to become a star they have to beat top notch competition in impressive fashion. Beating guys a level below them is not going to do it.
Donaire got there with the impressive KO of Vic and Montiel, everything in between was almost un-noticed by the masses but hardcore fans.
You can build them up to make more money out of the bout but the time is now for either guy to step it up and go to the next levelLast edited by TOBYLEE1; 03-29-2011, 11:51 AM.

Piper is right - these fighters arent gonna make millions until they become a star. You become a start by beating a star - meaning they Have to fight each other 1st - then the winner will make a million for the next big fight vs. Vazquez jr. John, et al. But, for instance, Pac didn't start making 15-20 mil+ until after he beat de la Hoya; same for Floyd. Bradley got 1 mil for fighting Alexander - Gamboa and Lopez won't get 1 mil+ each, but they'll make high 6 figures, and winner will make more next time.
You would think Arum would realize that this fight can't get much bigger. It'll never be a huge PPV fight. And it especially wont get bigger with the guys fighting Orlando Salido and Jorge Solis. The only way to build it up more now would be by putting them in w/ known guys - Gamboa against John, and Lopez against Marquez II on one card then have the winners face (presumably Gamboa and Lopez) Beating Salido, Concepcion, Mtwaga, etc. won't help build the fight as an attraction. Arum is smart enough to know that, but he's makin money off each individually and wants to continue that for as long as possible. Same reason he did Pac-Mosely - b/c its a fight PAc will easily win that he'll make good money doing b/c Mosely is a "name"

I believe his explanation even if its from Arum. I just don't think he is doing a good enough job if this is his plan. Because I'm pretty sure it's been been brewing for about two years now. Eventually one of these guys will get caught or just lose.
Two years should be long enough. You have a Cuban and a Puerto Rican, two strong fan bases. It shouldn't be that hard.
And this won't go more than a fight because Gamboa is going to knock Juanma out.

tony Lee - you and I were typing our message at the same time and said exactly the same thing - basically that Arum is making money off each individually. And that you dont become a start by beating Saildo and Solis; you do it by 1 of them beating the other

the problem with this theory of Arum is that I don't believe they will ever be big stars. It's just reality. JuanMa may get a little bigger than he already is but not much the Puerto Ricans already love him and Gamboa is just Gamboa - a cuban that will unfortunately never really have a huge fanbase besides the hardcores.
So arum can try to milk this for another year and what could happen? The best scenario is they both win a couple more fights against known names, but they aren't going to be super stars by beating the names in their division, who the casual fans don't know of course. Or the worst case scenario is one or both lose a fight, get KO'd. Then it totally ruins this fight of undefeateds.

top rank & bob arum does. He has a long, rich, proven track record of doing so & is going to the hall of fame.
Arum IS RIGHT in delaying gamboa vs lopez because both fighters ESPECIALLY GAMBOA need more seasoning & time to develop their skills, experience, exposure.
This fight needs marination. Arum knows WTF he is doing better than ****** ass loser posters on boxingscene.
b*tches.
Arum jsut wants more oney, its as simple as that. You *******s will buy anything that old basatrds throws in front of you and pay for through the nose.
Gamboas vs Lopez is overdue but we wont get it.
