Comments Thread For: Bert Sugar on Nonito Donaire's Golden Jump, Martinez

The headlines for the past couple of days have been chalked full with various storylines on Nonito Donaire's recent signing with Oscar De La Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions. Despite having just won his most significant bout as a professional under Bob Arum's Top Rank banner last month, the Filipino-American fighter felt that a change was in order and made a move that has taken the boxing world by storm. If Bert's theory of "you can't lose your P4P status if your winning" is true then Mayweather is still P4P the best cause he never loss. I know the haters will say he retired but he also came back and beat 2 guys the fake P4P guy was avoiding. I happen to disagree with Bert cause I never viewed Manny is P4P the best. Manny may have the best matchmaker and publicist P4P but you don't become P4P the best by fighting guys that have been recently soundly defeated right before you fought them. Bottom line, Floyd is P4P the best unless he turns Martinez down at 154 then Martinez would be the man in my book.

    1-PBF
    2-Martinez
    3-the Klitchsko Brothers
    4-Pacquiao
    5-Marquez

PBF did retire.. It's not hating if it's true. Everone loves an active fighter. How can one be great fighting once or twice a year?

        Shane Mosley with 5 lost
Juan Manuel Marquez with 4 lost
Oscar De La Hoya with 4 lost
Carlos Manuel Baldomir with 9 Lost
        and counting....

Anyway, i will prefer to believe Bert Sugar than a *****

Floyd wants nothing to do with boxing, he is an afterthought. fighting older, smaller guys at one fight per year doesn't cut it......if you are a boxer, then box......if you are scared, then say you're scared.

Yeah, but to maintain a P4P status, you have to fight. And almost all P4P lists have a one year limit before a fighter is removed, unless they are injured or prevented from entering ring for some reason they may be given an exception. But when a fighter willingly decides not to fight, you can't just keep him there forever. By your logic, if tomorrow PBF came out and said he was never going to fight again, then Martinez would be your P4P #1 guy. Then what if Sergio never stated he was retiring but didn't fight for two years? Would he still be #1 in your book? The earliest realistic look to see Mayweather back in the ring would be very late 2011 or, more than likely, 2012. That would be at least 1-1/2 years and probably closer to 2 years that he didn't fight? With that scenario, do you leave him #1? Nobody in the boxing world would, that's for sure...

yeah. pacquiao will give up the #1 spot when he retires...and i think sergio will be retired before manny. all sergio can do is fight the best at 154 and 160 and try to get fame/paydays while he is at it. he is still my fav active fighter, but i know we won't see him at #1 p4p anytime soon...
