Points etc

How exactly does this stuff work? I have 29186 points, however I'm not sure how you get them etc etc. I'm assuming it has something to do with Karma and the post count you have, but I've noticed people with the same post count as me have anywhere between 1,200-20,000.

Just wondering if anyone could fill me in
