WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire has signed a new promotional contract with Golden Boy Promotions, moving on from Top Rank, where he’s been fighting for a number of years. Up until recently when he stopped Fernando Montiel in the 2nd round last February to capture Montiel’s two titles, Donaire’s career had been in limbo since his win over Vic Darchinayan in 2007.
That obviously didn’t help matters. It’s sad that Donaire wasn’t matched against a big star until four years later after the Darchinyan fight because Donaire should have been fighting other stars within the past four years instead of having to wait this long.
Donaire is now looking to unify the bantamweight titles if possible before moving up to the super bantamweight division to capture titles at that weight. Recently, WBA bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno declined a fight with Donaire. This shows that it may not be easy an easy thing for Donaire to get fights now that he’s blown away Montiel. It’s now up to Golden Boy to try and see if they can get big fights for Donaire and make him into the kind of star that he has potential to be.
