    Papa Trinidad blast Cotto

    From El Nuevo Día:

    On Miguel Cotto:

"For another Tito Trinidad to arise... that will be difficult for a couple of reasons. First, you need to be talented, as Tito was, second, you need to have the discipline he had when training, and third, you need a person with a healthy lifestyle, that does not smoke or drink. Let's suppose that person actually exists: then you will need the fourth part, and that is good management. You won't get anywhere if you don't have anyone looking out for you properly.

The job of a manager is to protect his boxer's interests, like I did. I considered Campas easier to beat than Oba Carr, and we found out that was true. Campas was out in four and Carr lasted eight.

It has been said Miguel Cotto could be Tito's substitute. He has everything to do it... ¿does he have the management? I don't know. But he does have the industry on his side, unlike Tito. Miguel just needs what Tito had... the fans. Cotto can make as much money as De La Hoya did. Oscar had the industry behind him, but not the fans, because people know when you are 100% natural or when you are fake... when you take competitive fights or when you take easy fights.

That's what's happening to Miguel Cotto; he's fighting bums... they are inflating his record and everybody knows that. If Cotto keeps doing that, fans won't give him respect. Cotto has to face the best fighters in his division. He could have faced Arturo Gatti, instead he chose Gianluca Branco (now Ricardo Torres).

Your place in boxing will be determined by your record against proven fighters. Cotto won a vacant belt, but he hasn't fought a champion yet. It's not about being a titleholder for an organization, like he is now, it's about beating a world champion. To be a world champion, you have to beat a world champion.

To get to the top he has to face Gatti, a good, lucrative fight to secure his future. He has to take risks. For example, when Tito fought "Macho" Camacho, he was only 21, and he was facing a fighter that had already been 3 time world champion, way more experienced and with good technique."

I love it. I don't consider it a blast or a negative attack, Papa Trinidad is just stating the facts.

On Tito's 1999 decision win over De La Hoya:

"A month before the fight, I asked for a meeting with the ex president of the NSAC, Elias Ghanem, along with 10 other people, including a prosecutor of the Nevada Department of Justice, just to make sure the refeere and the judges for the fight were going to be fair. I didn't go there to buy consciences, but to make a fair petition and he (Ghanem) told me: 'Don Félix, you can rest assured that I will make sure the officials are the most capable the Comision has.'

That's the only time I did something like that, and that was because we were fighting the industry's protected boxer. We wanted to tell Mr. Elias that we were in that fight because we had the credentials to compete with Oscar De La Hoya. Our petition stemmed from what has always been said in boxing, about corrupt judging, and we wanted to avoid that. We wanted the judges to see two talented fighters and make a fair decision. We were worried, because we have seen too many fights in which one has to ask what fight were the judges watching, like DLH-Sturm. Tito not only beat DLH, but also the boxing industry."
