Beating up washed up guys like Cotto or Margarito do nothing for him and are a waste of time

Fighting the winner of the Cotto vs Margarito will increase Martinez' casual fanbase tremendously. At the moment nobody knows who Martinez is. Going up to super middleweight right now will only insure that he stays unknown. Most fighters before gaining a huge fanbase had to beat another fighter with a huge fanbase first in order to get a fanbase of their own. Beating Cotto will do do that for Martinez.

He should probably move up to super middleweight after he gets a big fight at 154, otherwise he'll stay unknown forever since there's no big names for casual fans up there.

Like it or not, part of the politics of being recognized #1 p4p is having big names in their resume.
