Comments Thread For: What Does Ali vs Frazier Mean 40 Years Later?

By Cliff Rold - Tuesday marked the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day.

    No, really.

Not the anniversary boxing fans are celebrating?

No, apparently, there was another anniversary on Tuesday as well. 40 years ago, a pair of undefeated Heavyweight Champions, one reigning and the other never having lost his crown in the ring, locked horns for 15 of the most memorable rounds ever staged.

    Joe Frazier.

    Muhammad Ali.

The first time. March 8, 1971.

It was, truly, the Fight of the 20th Century.

    Or was it?

On the anniversary of the event, the question comes to mind and it’s not an easy answer. It can be said Ali-Frazier I remains the best combination of fight and event in the last forty years. [Click Here To Read More]

How it came to be is more memorable than the fight itself. I have the utmost respect for Frazier for lobbying on Ali's behalf. He could have turned the other way and still had a successful career. A shame Ali didnt show him as much respect in return.

Behind the scenes when Ali was out Frazier help out him and his family. And before the first fight they sat down in private and Ali had a vision that this fight will be the biggest fight in history. Frazier knew that Ali was going to hype up the fight the way Ali does. The bitterness came when they were preparing for the second fight and Frazier couldn't take it no more and it erupted on the set of wide world of sports. Ever since then Frazier didn't look back. So after the second fight Ali didn't have as much trouble as he did in the second fight and almost knock out frazier in the second round. So Ali figured if can get up under the skin of his opponents that works in his favor. In the first fight Frazier was calm, determnine and on a misson. The second and third fight Frazier was full of rage and hate. But after their careers Ali did apologize for all the stuff he has said back in the 80's. But Frazier is still holding some resentment still. Even though there was a method to Ali's madness there was no maliciousness behind it.

Ali vs Frazier I will always be the Fight of the Century for me. Madison Square Garden, many hollywood stars, and athletes, and politicians were there. And over 100 million viewers watched that fight all over the globe. And the fight itself had two guys going at it with everthing they had. The sound of the blows landing, and the grunts from the impact of the punches can be heard and felt throughout that fight. Ali vs Frazier II and III did not have the same impact as I, especially with the classic left hook that knocked Ali on his back with his tassels flying in the air. Giving Ali his first butt whippin. I still think it was a disrespectful thing for The City of Philadelphia to put a statue of Sylvester Stallone instead of Joe Frazier, the real heavy champion, in its city.

It has to be considered one of the greatest rivalries in sports.
