they make fighters money
give them confidence
make them "champions"
they leverage fights
sometimes they force fighters to fight eachother
but they are also, more often than not, the mealticket for shady organizations
and not much else
the ring belt is simmiar to the consensus championship
but i like to recognize the guy who beat the guy
or int he case of a vacate seat to that throne
a box off btween the two best who follow

The Ring belt.
Its generally considered the most important among hardcore fans, and its a belt you don't have to paid for the privilege to carry it
However from a casual point of view one of the alphabet belts are more appealing simply because they have the word "World" in it and that stigma is attached to the person whoever holds it. e.g David Haye is the World...etc.
The same stigma also apply to load of fighters wanting to be known as the "world champion" as opposed to the "ring champion", it doesn't have that same ring to it (pardon the pun) .
I know a few casual fans who consider the WBC the most important, however they have no real reason for it, they just think its the most important.

Bit of a tricky subject this. Majority of boxing fans say 'the alphabets are worthless' and 'The Ring title is most legitimate' etc.
But if a fighter retired and had never won a 'world' title and only ever won a Ring title i think he would get looked upon as a failure to be honest.

I also heard that the WBC and WBA are only belts recognised in every part of the world so in my opinion that makes them the most 'legitimate'.

Although it is considered a major title, it doesn't seem like it weighs too much on careers, its not a paper belt, but i see ur point...
