    Mares vs Alvarez

The only thing Alvarez has over Mares is the fact that he is 20 and is now a Champion. Mares is 25 and should be the IBF Bantamweight Champion but didn't get the nod vs Perez. Hopefully he beats Abeko and gets what is rightfully his. Now these two Mexican studs are both tremendous talents but are not viewed the same. The fact that there MIGHT be more upside for Alvarez because he is so young, that shouldn't be the reason Canelo is being pushed to be the next Mexican superstar while Mares is virtually an unknown compared to Alvarez. Abner is fighting the better competition and might be the better overall fighter. Its also better to be under GBP then Gary Shaw.

    canelo has palpable starpower

mares isn't that type of guy. i'm a big fan of the kid.

his fight with agbeko is the sleeper canidate for fight of the year in my eyes.
i cannot wait to see that fight. it's not getting the hype in boxing communities that it should in my estimation.
whats gonna be faster, agbeko's head movement or mares fists?

    additionally, mares is a bantamweight
the girls dont go ga ga over a 118 lber

anybody here ever been around a bantamweight extensively?
a normal sized guy could swallow a bantamweight.

if there's going to be a bantamweight superstar he's going to need highlight reel knockouts to generate the buzz.
people hear 118 lbs and say "damn, my gf is bigger than that guy"
little do they know that the lower weights are where the brutal fights take place, but that's what makes them casual fans.

As much as people would deny it, Alvarez's unique look is a big part of it. Also, Alvarez's youth has you seeing the potential, whereas a 25 year old isn't looked at that way.

I feel u man. Guys in the low, lower weights don't get too much buzz outside of the hardcore boxing fans. Your right about the Abeko fight too. That fight will be a goodie and it will def be better then the one we saw saturday night. Me personally, I don't hold anything against the little guys. The best fight I've ever seen was with 2 guys weighing 122 pounds.

I'm afraid that Mares fighting top competition might backfire on him. He might get brutal beating from someone like Donaire, Montiel or even Agbeko. De La Hoya himself was fighting top competition at young age, but all that guys were handpicked, those who were old, feather fisted, smaller.

I think its a huge part of it. Oscar was a great fighter himself but looking like a pretty boy helped him become a household name.

Hope it doesn't. I hope it just makes him stronger. I like Mares. Dude fights like a warrior.

Your 100% right but it's about making money and Mares has two things going against him...

                #1 He is a bantamweight

#2 He doesn't have the following Canelo has

I know outside of the hardcore fans, the lower weights don't really get any appreciation but I can't think of a fight in the higher weights better then the first Morales-MAB fight.

A good looking charismatic fighter is more popular than a boxer with no charisma and isn't anything special personality wise. Why is this so difficult to understand.
