Pacquiao could outbox Mayweather – Bernstein

VETERAN boxing analyst Al Bernstein is placing his bet on Filipino pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao over unbeaten American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Bernstein told examiner.com Friday that Pacquiao (52-3-2 win-loss-draw card with 38 knockouts) is a rapid-fire punching machine, “It’s a matter of who throws the most punches,” he said. “Mayweather may throw 500 pun¬ches in 12-round, but Pacquiao may throw 1,100? What’s May¬weather going to do with the extra 600 punches that Pac-quiao will be throwing at him?”
Bernstein made the comment barely a week after the negotiation for the Pacquiao vs. May¬weather mega bout reopened.
Bernstein, who hosted several boxing fights in 1980s for ESPN sports and National Broadcasting Co. is a winner of the Sam Taub Award for excellence in broadcasting and journalism for boxing in 1988.
Bernstein also rejected the accusation of Mayweather camp that Pacquiao is using performance-enhancing drugs to become stronger fighter. He said trainer Freddie Roach simply could impart good fighting techniques, “Another reason I don’t think Manny is on steroids is because it’s not like Manny got stronger. He didn’t get stronger as he got older, he is beating bigger guys because he and Roach changed his technique in the ring.”
“Steroids have nothing to do with technique. Back when Manny was fighting Morales, he would stand in front of him, come right at him, throw his punches and exchange with him. They made brilliant adjustments,” Bernstein added.
Pacquiao’s Canadian adviser Mike Koncz has confirmed the renewed negotiation with May¬weather’s camp.
“There’s been discussions, so far, it’s looking positive. It looked positive last time, too. We’re always hoping to entertain a fight with Mayweather,” said Koncz.
