Yeah but that's so ******, as if Cotto couldn't hear and KNOW what to do next, I mean he's not helping anybody except for Cotto, by distracting Foreman. If I was in there, I'd tell him to 'stfu and let me think.'

That's some questionable behavior there. It's either the ref had money on Foreman or Arum thought that Foreman was going to be his next superstar.

It was a good refereeing job. Nobody wanted the first fight in Yankee Stadium in forever to end with a leg injury.

Exactly. Mercante was trying to govern a good fight. That's why he was pissed when Yuri injured his knee and that's why he overruled the towel. As for him telling Yuri to go the other way, maybe it was because there was a puddle of water in that corner he was heading and Mercante didn't want him slipping again. Who knows, but I'm sure there was no conspiracy here.

              agree.

i believe he was also disheartened at the fact that foreman was ready to spill his guts out there but just couldn't due to his bad knee.

i could easily imagine myself doing the same thing he did.

              bad refereeing? debatable.

              su****ious behavior? nah.

id buy that for a dollar...mercante doesn't like to have fights stopped over bs...and if anything he is pro cotto...remember mercante was the same ref in the cotto/clottey and cotto/judah that wouldn't let the fights stop over nonsense...clottey's leg or judah's balls, lol... i remember he told clottey to "suck it up, be a man"...def one of the best refs in the game... and remember his and cotto's fathers had just passed...i think he just wanted the fans to get a good fight and not a early night on a leg injury...

i guess you can blame him for being passionate and caring too much.

                    According to Wikipedia:

                    "Referees have the following roles:
                    • Gives instructions to both boxers before the fight
                    • Determines when to start or stop a count when a fighter is down
                    • Determines when a foul is so egregious that a warning should be given or points taken away
                    • Signal when the round is over
                    • Determines when one fighter's health will be endangered by more blows and thus, stops the fight.

In the past, referees were involved in judging the fight. However, that role has been progressively replaced by a panel of judges, except for domestic fights in some countries."

The question is: Are refs even allowed to coach boxers in fights they work?

                    Interesting video, BTW.

                      man you ricans are funny...

it really depends on how you spin what the ref says.

it possible the ref got upset that foreman fell cause that would've been a very anti-climatic ending. that would delegitimize cotto's winning the vacant strap.

and the ref telling foreman to go to his right and get hit with cotto's left hook is clearly something that clearly favors cotto.

where the video has the ref saying "get out foreman, quick" is spurious... the audio is so jumbled he could've been saying anything.
