  • as a student of the lower weight classes were most pinoys fight at. this is my opinion.
the filipino style of boxing from the 90's was kind of like an hybrid beetwen mexican and japanese always forward poor tecnique lots of guts

mostly because this guys were poor like rubillar quijano chavez batawang didnt have good trainers i guess yet there were exceptions like tunacao and penalosa who were great technicians

the pinoy boxing "revolution" with the success of pacquiao the sport became more well known more young skilled guys trying it and they formed some kind of a pattern which i guess its the pinoy boxing style

aggressive good tecnique yet little ring savvy and below average defense

recent champs or prospects id have the pleasure to see like condes niettes banal bautista concepcion dapudrong etc.. all have confirmed this

imo all of the pinoys could use better trainers conditioning etc so its ironic how yamaguchi ( related to kenji yamaguchi?) wants to go there to train

This is what I don't get. You're claiming that pinoys don't have a style, ok. Yet if one moves to America and gets trained by his Philippine-to-the-core military father, he's all of a sudden an American style fighter? He's still trained by another Pinoy, Jonathan Penalosa, who is from the Philippines. Not just Robert Garcia.

            • There is no such thing as Filipino style of boxing. Maybe most Filipino prospects are going forward in a fight is because they want to be the next Pacquioa. I forgot his name, an Australian or American ref who has been living in the Philippins, said that Pinoy boxers has been lacking the basics, such as the jab.

Yamaguchi was probably meant when he said "Filipino style" is when there are 2 top Pinoy fighters in Pacquiao and Donaire. Both have speed, power, and good foot movement.

Too bad that Gerry Penalosa started only to get exposure when he was near the end of his career. Z Gorres could have been a world champion right now if not for his career ending fight. Bernabe Concepcion should have stay in jr. featherweight, fighting taller fighters is difficult for him.

Even if it is only Pac and Donaire, at least Philippines made a mark in history of boxing. I am not talking about just winning world title, but multiple weight titles. They are also p4p fighters.

LOL you just got owned as the other poster said Donaire is also being trained by Penalosa, who is a Filipino.

He might talk like an American but he has a heart of a Filipino Warrior and he fights for them. Filipino blood (100%) flows in his veins.

Yeah and it's the Mexican style to beat the living crap out of Filipinos, especially the young and great ones that you've guys had.....lol

I look at the whole body of work from each country because 2 fighters beating Mexicans is not the rule but the exception while Mexicans beating Filipinos is the rule based on the fact that Mexicans lead in championship fights and based on all the greats and prospects that Mexicans have beat.

Pugilism beyond the sport of boxing, yes there is....it's called the FMA. Arnis/Kali/Escrima that is an ancient and still thriving art of Filipino Boxing. I happen to still be involved with it and used to teach it in some capacity.

One can see it now and popularized in the 70s courtesy of Bruce Lee and now his student in Guro Dan Inosanto and a host of students/instructors/students everywhere. Jeet Kune Do is often synonymous nowadays with the Filipino Boxing due to Guro Dan...but obviously are hybrids of ideas and concepts.

Sure the sport of boxing is of another thing but THERE IS SUCH THING AS FILIPINO BOXING that even preceded that of the British/English boxing.
