In light of people saying the modern HW division is filled with blown up cruiserweights, I thought id take a look at how many blown up cruiserweights some "legends" fought in their career. No surprise, Joe Louis fought mostly blown up...or just flat out Light Heavyweights, even slipped in some blown up middle-weights in there. Seems like the HW division ****** back then considering real men, who were always over 200 lbs were nowhere to be found. Oh yeah and if 18 year old Corrie Sanders took a time machine back then he would have been the fastest man on the planet.
Here is a list of the guys who Joe Louis fought who WERE NOT currently under 200 lbs or didnt start their careers under 200 lbs..fully hyrdated as well
Primo Carnera-A sideshow act that was in fixed fights.
Steve Ketchel-First fight of Ketchel's career...which lasted 3 fights, he went 0-3 He was an audience member who wandered into the ring.
Tony Galento-5'9, 240, fat as hell, just a short fat guy.
Abe Simon-Who Louis fought twice at the end of Simon's career. He even gave him a title shot, in the last fight of Simon's career, when he was coming off of a KO loss to Lem Franklin and had won 2 of his last 6.
Buddy Baer- 37 year old bum...knocked Louis down though. Last 2 fights of his mediocre career.
Thats it, he also would have lost 12 round fights to 174 lbs Billy Conn, after 1942, despite weighing well over 200 lbs, usually more like 211, Joe Louis would never again set foot in the ring with anyone weighing over 199 lbs.
Ali did edge Louis with 8 actual HW's on his resume.
