look at those old duds with no technique or boxing skills.
boxing skills actually developed in the 1990s- true story.Comment

why is everyone pretending like this fight shows any skills? it doesn't

nice footage man of a nice fight. i still think fighters today are much stronger and faster, and just overall more "polished". taking nothing away from the great SRR, he is hte best pound for pound boxer of all time, BUT, if you just stuck him in a time machine, without letting him have the advantages of modern sports science training, he would get hurled.
lol you tryin to tell me that andre berto
and miguel cotto
and manny and floyd
these guys would toss around a prime SRR at WW?
footage doesnt even exist of the guy in his prime
whatever you're seeing when you watch robinson is footage taken when he was past his best days.
people who matter
with opinions who matter
who have been involved with boxing for many generations and have been ringside for thousands of rounds
who saw ray robinson (and other greats from his time undoubtedly)
most of them say sugar ray robinson was the best fighter to ever lace them up, and that he had no flaws.
he had a cast iron jaw
he was a tremendous boxer in terms of the use of the ring, and distance
he could floor a guy with either hand. plenty of people give him the nod on best left hook ever thrown.
was blindingly fast and had the reflexes and skills to put it to use
as a WW he was monsterous in terms of reach, height, and frame (74 inch reach, almost six feet tall)
you serious, dog?!
lol
unleash a prime ray robinson, tommy hearns, ray leonard, any of the bonafide greats
on the current landscape of WW's
and they'd litterally rack up a body count. only the tip of the top would even make it out of the first few rounds.Last edited by New England; 03-02-2011, 09:48 AM.Comment

Great vid, much more detail. Amazing how SRR is always on his toes except for the very instant he throws.Comment

I always kind of laugh when I hear 'modern sports science training'. who actually does that stuff today? whenever you see the best conditioned athletes, theyre usually doing what?nice footage man of a nice fight. i still think fighters today are much stronger and faster, and just overall more "polished". taking nothing away from the great SRR, he is hte best pound for pound boxer of all time, BUT, if you just stuck him in a time machine, without letting him have the advantages of modern sports science training, he would get hurled.

boy, thats some new age stuff right there. the only thing that has changed is that some boxers lift weights...and the two p4p greats of our generation, Pacquiao and Mayweather, definitely dont life heavy weights. I remember reading that Roy Jones Jr and Tyson never lifted heavy weights either in their prime, and I certainly dont think that held them back physically...
now, if you want to say that nutrition wise things have changed, then you have a case. but even then personally I wouldnt agree. In the shot put Brian Oldfield has the 4th best record all time back from 1975, and Bob Beamon has the second longest jump all time all the way back from 1968. and these are mostly purely athletic sports.
so I dont think athletically the guys today are THAT superior. its only by a small amount, if at all. and as most people know, boxing is far more based around skill than a relatively purely athletic sport like the shot put or the long jumpComment

I agree, as for idiots who point to better records in athletics like sprinting/high jump etc that bears no comparison to boxing. Relatively conservative movements/limited technique where your your trying to beat a record in which opponents are irrelevant is going to improve over time (objectively), is absolutely different to a range of dynamic movements and creativity exhibited over a scheduled duration in which the goal is to outpoint an unpredictable opponent, not to mention its a hugely subjective contest.I always kind of laugh when I hear 'modern sports science training'. who actually does that stuff today? whenever you see the best conditioned athletes, theyre usually doing what?
