Comments Thread For: Steward: Cotto Looking For a Statement With Mayorga

WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto has already arrived in Las Vegas and he's training hard for next Saturday's defense against Ricardo Mayorga at the MGM Grand. Trainer Emanuel Steward says his boxer is looking to make a big statement against Mayorga. Cotto wants to prove that he's still one of the best boxers in the sport. The Puerto Rican champion has been away from the ring since last June title win over Yuri Foreman.

How is beating a shot Mayorga proving he can hang with Margarito and Pacquiao? Mayorga hasn't been good in years.

Yeah but Margarito hasn't been the same fighter since he fought Cotto either. So the same can be said about Margarito hasn't looked good in years too.

Lets be real on this(referring to some here saying that Mayorga is actually a real challenge), this ain't nothing more than a glorified sparring session!! Just look at Mayorga's past 4 fights in the past 4 years(cause that's all he's fought during all that time) & it shows he DOES NOT DESERVE to be fighting for ANY world title... The only statement Cotto must make is to look extremely dominant & to take this clown OUT within 7 or 8 rounds(at most) cause Cotto has absolutely NOTHING to gain by beating Mayorga(Even if it's by a 1st round KO) & has EVERYTHING to loose & Mayorga has EVERYTHING to gain in a upset victory & ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to loose!!!!

The only thing this fight will prove, is about Cotto's chin. Mayorga still has those bombs and we gotta see how Cotto reacts to them hits. That's the big test. Does he get hit and abandon the gameplan and go backwards, or gets hit but continues to move laterally?
