Comments Thread For: “Fighting Words” – Starry Nights: How Top Rank Should Follow Up With Nonito Donaire, Brandon Rios

by David P. Greisman - Stunning knockouts. Sensational victories. We call them star-making performances, but in truth the performance only brings the boxer to the precipice of stardom.

That’s because it is not just his performance that makes him a star, but his promoter, too.

And for Nonito Donaire and Brandon Rios, their promoter must now follow through.

Both are coming off star-making performances: Donaire with a stunning technical knockout of Fernando Montiel on Feb. 19, Rios with a sensational stoppage this past Saturday over Miguel Acosta.

The wins, on their own, have boxing fans talking, and that, of course, is a good thing. There is always so much going on in the sweet science – another fight coming up, another fight that’s just been signed, another fight that’s being negotiated, another boxer or trainer or manager or promoter who’s stolen the spotlight with something he said.

That’s the inherent problem. A stunning knockout or a sensational victory is just one night, one fight in a career. The challenge is to capitalize on that moment, to reach beyond the momentary, to keep the conversations going and to keep the interest and the excitement from waning.

While both Donaire and Rios are on the precipice, each will need a different route to get to the top.

This is somewhat familiar territory for Donaire. His previous big win was shocking enough that it got people talking. But the follow-through on that one-punch technical knockout of Vic Darchinyan in July 2007 was so poor that, for the three years that followed, the win over Darchinyan was the only truly notable thing about Donaire worth mentioning. top rank knows wtf its doing. it has a lengthy track record of developing fighters into stardom.

golden boy on the other hand does not have a single fighter it developed into a star fighter.

    NONE.

donaire & rios are in good hands.

top rank has a hall of fame match maker in trampler. all these people including this writer complaining about gamboa, donaire not getting this fight or that fight dont know wtf they are talking about.

they sound like the idiots who rushed a manufactured superfight in tim bradley vs devon alexander, just like the same idiots who want gamboa vs lopez now.

there's a reason why top rank has a great track record for developing talent & there's a reason why its match maker is going to the hall of fame.

they know wtf they are doing.

May I reduce this to the degree required?
Donaire is in all probability the real thing. If he can put on a little weight, the resulting match ups could be world class affairs.

Rios is a guy who had a great night against a talented opponent who faded quicker then I thought he would. I think the eight year difference took Miguels game away.
Acosta hit Brandon right on the money multiple times and hurt him.
            Great win Brandon!

But at the end of the day, Rios will be resigned to ESPN dates if he does not shape up his defense and his charactar.
(Did he ever apologize to Roach or even Manny for that matter?)
Spine is shown in many different ways in this racket and Rios will become a quick footnote if moved swiftly against any aggressive cat who can crack.
And of course it all depends upon Rios not cracking up personally first.

Arum will find a couple of guys to make it interesting before putting him in over his head for a large payday.

            Nuff said.

It was Brandon Rios's pressure that made Miguel Acosta fade away.

What does character have to do with being a good fighter?

Did Freddie Roach apologize to Robert Garcia, Antonio Margarito as well as the other fighters and trainers for all the trash talking he did? Did Manny Pacquiao ever apologize for his racist marketing in which he marketed himself as a "Mexican Assassin"? I'm sick of everybody always giving a free pass to Freddie and Manny for things that they would criticize Brandon or Floyd for.

trash talking is heaven and earth different from making fun of an illness. margarito and company is not mocking roach alone but the entire group of people who has the same condition. roach gave his opinion about illegal wraps which is the reason why margarito was banned for 1 year (and still banned except from Texas boxing commision). i guess the saying "truth hurts" is really true after all.

and i don't remember manny ever marketed himself the "Mexicutioner" (not mexican assasin as what you are saying). I remember Jimmy Kimmel asked him one time on an interview what he wants to be called. Jimmy made manny choose if he wants to be called "mexicutioner" or "pacman" and manny said "pacman" it is.
