Pacquiao to decide if Ariza is in or out

MANILA, Philippines — The fate of conditioning coach Alex Ariza is in the hands of Manny Pacquiao and trainer Freddie Roach, the Filipino fighter’s adviser told the Bulletin Saturday.

“That’s between Manny and Freddie and Alex,” said Canadian Mike Koncz from the US.

Roach had told a pair of Manila-based scribes last week in Los Angeles that Pacquiao can whip himself up into shape even without Ariza in training camp.

Roach is preparing to head to Manila to kick off the eight-week buildup for Pacquiao’s May 7 bout with Shane Mosley.

Koncz said Roach also told him of the same thing but he politely declined to comment if Ariza will be brought in next month or be asked to stay in Los Angeles.

Pacquiao will travel to Baguio in the second week of March for training camp.

Ariza came into the scene in mid-2008 and is widely credited for Pacquiao’s landmark wins over Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto.

Roach, who has been calling the shots in Pacquiao’s corner since 2001, said he will not even look for a replacement for Ariza.

“I know how to get him in shape and Manny knows how to get in shape,” said Roach.

Pacquiao could not be reached to comment as he is in Hong Kong with his family.

Honestly, I think this is kind of unfortunate for Ariza.

Still, he was simply brought in to teach him how to get in shape. I'm surprised he's lasted this long and I doubt he'll have trouble getting work outside of the Pacquiao camp.

    Nonetheless, this should be interesting.

I think Roach is just hinting this because Amir will be training in the Philippines as well. I don't think Manny's going to fire him. For what reason? He needs someone to help him with the stretches and motivate with the calories.

I don't believe anything that comes out of Kontz mouth.

every boxing trainer at elite level, knows how to get a fighter into shape, cause they been there themselves. But as times go by, small and minimal adjustments will be made, as we evolve as humans. Thats where the "experts" come in.

I dont know, if its drug filled diet or not, but manny is so well conditioned, that it would be a ****** move to get rid of ariza. After so many camps, so many hours in training and figuring out the best diet and regime, their relationship must be at a level, where they know each other so well, that ariza knows when manny needs a kick in the ass and when to slow down in training and that is a crucial part of getting into peak condition.

What pac and ariza had planned for one fight years ago, might not be the best solution now, as age, physique etc, might have changed pac. So wash, rinse and repeat, might not be the best solution, perhaps minor or major adjustments has to be made and by the looks of it, it seems as if, ariza has the right tools, to do so.
