Comments Thread For: Ricky Burns Continues To Crave a Fana Unification
WBO world super-featherweight champion Ricky Burns reiterated his dream of a unification fight with Mzonke Fana but knows he has to first take care of Joseph Laryea.
I was thinking HBO, Showtime, or someone else could do a pretty solid tournament at 130 for pretty cheap. This is considered a weaker weight class, but a 4 or 8-man bracket could make for a very cool event.
In one bracket part, you can have Burns (assuming he wins) and Fana. That way the winner is the RING champ.
In the other bracket part, you could have some interesting fighters/matches.
-Roman Martinez (#4 @ 130 according to RING) is interesting since he lost to Burns and a rematch would be a good selling point.
-Jason Litzau (#10 @ 130) just beat Celestino Caballero, is an American, and has already been on HBO.
-Rafael Marquez (#9 @ 126) is a huge name, could be relatively cheap since he is coming off a loss, and wants to win a title in a 3rd weight class.
-Juan Carlos Salgado (#5 @130), Daniel Ponce De Leon (#5 @ 126), or Cristobal Cruz (#6 @ 126) are all former belt holders and relatively well-known Mexican fighters. Plus, putting them in with Roman Martinez would make a classic Mex-PR rivalry fight.
-Jorge Linares (#7 @ 130) and Bernabe Concepcion (#8 @ 126) are other reasonable options.
Again, my idea is for a CHEAP tournament to establish 1 or 2 stars @ 130 (maybe even the winner being set for a big fight against JMM or Gamboa if they move up). So no Uchiyama or Ao since there would be too much $ to bring them over from Japan. This may produce a new star or two as well as establish a RING champ. Anyways, just throwing it out there.
