    Sergio Martinez...

Do you think he will ever get his 'big break' fight?

IMO hes a super star already, the KO of the punisher confirmed this after the first tough fight. People like Floyd and Manny got their 'big break' fights with Oscar De La Hoya, beating him turned them both into world wide mega stars.

So my question is, when will Maravilla get his and who will it be against?

I'd love him to get a chance against one of these two but I just dont see it happening right now or in the near future, and Sergio isnt getting any younger. Is there any one single boxer left big enough to give him that chance other than these two? Could you see oscar coming back to fight him? I think a fight with Cotto could do good for him but I also cant see this happening.

Do not turn this into a Pac/PBF Thread, this is about SERGIO MARTINEZ.

the thing with sergio is that he was massively underrated before the first fight with pdub and now fans are finally realizing just how good he was so they are kind of overrating him instead. i never underrated the guy, even during the build-up of sergio-williams 1, i kept stressing that he not only could make the fight a good one but that he had a good chance of beating pdub (who was the "man to beat" at that time)with his power, so while i do recognize his success, it wasn't really a shock for me enough to suddenly jump on his bandwagon.

i don't think he's a superstar yet, i believe he's more of a flavor of the month and he's too old to keep waiting for more big breaks or at least retain his peak. he already got his big break with his fights with pdub and kelly... if you're asking for breaks greater than that, i think the chance is slim. if only this happened earlier in his career...

PBF is more realistic than Pac, but if Mayorga upsets Cotto then he and Marvella would be really fun.

Being a superstar in boxing has to do with popularity more so than talent and skills, Mayweather would've been at the top of the heap years ago, if it weren't for that. Instead he had to wait until the Oscar fight, the same way Pacquiao did.

Roy Jones in his prime had to take a back seat to past prime Tyson, past prime Evander, and Oscar.

That highlight reel KO over Paul brought him a long way, but for him to take the next step, he's either going to have to beat Pacquiao or Mayweather or have to run through at least 5 of the most popular fighters around his weight class. He already has Pavlik and Williams, but he's going to need Cotto, Margarito, and either Chavez Jr., Lemeiux, or Sturm. It's tough to build a superstar without facing one, let alone an Argentinian in the US.

I think your right, I recon if he was to beat people like Saul Alvarez and Chavez Jr, this would make him hugely well known to all Mexicans and fans of these two popular young fighters. Taking out someone like Cotto would help also. I cant see a fight with Pac happening, Floyd maybe I suppose as hes abit bigger than Pacman. Beating Sturm also would be a huge move if he could do that also. I feel for Sergio as he's is not exactly young in boxing terms. Hes got to be what 36 or 37 by now?

I'd doubt it, mainly because of age and nationality. Now, if he were Mexican - American and 10 years younger, he'd already be a star by now. Best he can probably do now is to try and make decent WCB purses for at least the next two years.

i dont think he will reach the level of fame pac and floyd have. he either has to beat one of them which i dont think he will or should. floyd and pac wont fight him and i dont think they should either. sergio will just have to keep racking up big wins and hope to either steal the spotlight or have the torch passed when pac and floyd retire.

clean up MW then move up to 168, plenty of huge fights there and a chance for martinez to build on his recent run of big wins. then u can just hope for the best, with the politics of boxing u never know.

the important thing for him is to maintain his momentum and keep busy.

if somehow this sudden popularity gets into his head and he starts getting picky with whom he fights, he might end up becoming a one hit wonder.

i think his best option is to go up in weight. both pac and floyd became huge AFTER they went up in weight and i'm sure the same would hold true to Martinez.

If he's truly a great fighter, he should have no problems whatsoever going up. in weight and becoming a champion.

                  like this guy said^^^
he has to keep his momentum. i thikn what he should aim for is best fights that make him dough

no one (floyd/pac) is gonna give him a fight due to the risk/reward.

cotto won't be around long enough I don't think so sergio has to make this happen. and cotto's not built for 160.

                  1) force a fight with sturm and ko him spectacularily, he can make dough in europe just like he can here.
                  2) try and set up a fight with lemieux, would be big biz in montreal. gun for bute.
                  3) kirkland and angulo- either one can increase his popularity
                  4) hope pirog gets off his ass, that can be a superfight if pirog stops celebrating for 8 months after big victories....
                  5) margarito rematch if he beats cotto/mayorga

Big break fight, like a ppv fight or something??I don't get what U mean.He isn't as popular as the other 2,but he can beat them both & they will continue to avoid him.if 1 were to look at accomplishments in each's last 3 fights,Martinez easily has been in with better opponents. He deserves more from boxing fans, but boxing fans are too busy pampering boxing's 2 biggest divas to care about the struggles of other fighters.

How can Martinez be overrated when he can beat the 2 fighters ratted higher than him who are cherrypicking big time & receiving major credit for fights they are supposed to win??If Martinez is overrated, what does that really say about fighting guys like Margarito,Clottey & now Mosley who Ur favored to beast by a ****ing landslide??
