Comments Thread For: Still-determined Eddie Chambers still bristles at small talk

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - It’s not an easy task.

But if you really must go all-out to get under the skin of amiable heavyweight contender Eddie Chambers – there’s one way that’s quicker than most.

Suggest that the second-decade professional – a veteran of 38 fights and a winner in 36 – might be better served chasing a world-title dream in a lighter, less giant-infested weight class.

Do that… and see how quickly the frame of a 6-foot-1, 208-pounder seems to double in size.

“Yeah, let’s just say I’ve been asked that a lot,” Chambers said, when given the scenario for the umpteenth time since he hit the heavyweight radar four years ago with consecutive defeats of an unbeaten Derric Rossy, a still-serviceable Dominick Guinn and recent title challenger Calvin Brock.

“But you’d think it would go away after a while when people see I’m not just sliding by with wins over guys. I’m at this weight, and I’m dominating guys who are good fighters and bigger fighters by walking them down. I guess it’s not supposed to be happening, but it does.”

The Pittsburgh-born/Philadelphia-honed stylist got the “hey, wouldn’t cruiserweight make sense” treatment again Monday, just 72 hours after a unanimous decision rematch over Rossy ended a self-imposed 11-month exile and put him back in line for a shot at the IBF heavyweight crown.

Of course, the IBF ***elry he so covets is still held by 6-foot-6 Ukrainian incumbent Wladimir Klitschko – the very foe who stopped Chambers in round 12 last March and prompted the near one-year layoff.

The 28-year-old had won a WBO title eliminator to get crack No. 1 at Klitschko last March, and he’s steadfast in his belief that another meeting with the 240-plus pounder would end differently. [Click Here To Read More]

Just to point out, but Chambers is about the same height and weight as Shavers, Quarry, and Joe Louis, none of whom were ever accused of being too small for the division.

Good point, but fighters tend to be a little bigger now. Eddie isn't too small, his skills help him punch above his weight, it's just that Wlad's a monster.

Eddie doesn't punch like those guys either.

You have to be a special athlete to be short and still successful in the HW division, and Chambers just isn't that special. He's got a solid resume with wins over Sam Peter, Dominick Guinn, and Dimitrenko.... ****, his resume is better than David Hayes, but he needs to make a lot more changes than simply beat some journeyman if he wants to be champion.

If he wants to come back at Heavyweight, i'd like to see him try to take on Arreola or maybe Povetkin again. Seeing him back in there with Klitschko after only a couple fights would be a disservice to the fans. He would be wasting everyone's time and ending his career.

...but Quarry, Shavers and Louis all had great power

Chambers' biggest handicapp is not his size, it's his punch

Chambers can beat most HWs, but not Wlad, Wlad is simply a terrible style matchup for him. I think he should go to CW for a few fights because he can win a title easily there, thus becoming a bigger name than he is now (look at Haye and Adamek who have done much less than Chambers at HW, yet they're highly regarded because they were CW champions). Then he can come back up to HW and he'll have enough name and leverage to get a shot at whoever is holding the WBC or WBA title then (Haye has said he'll retire, and Vitali will most likely be retired by then since he's almost 40). The only way he shouldn't go down to CW is if Haye gave him a shot (which Haye would never do since he'll never fight a live HW) or Vitali, but since he already lost to Wlad I doubt he would have much interest in that fight, and still it would be a longshot for Chambers to beat Vitali.

But he should forget about going against Wlad again, it's suicide.

Real talk from a real fighter, none of that Povetkbiatch or Diva "Vagina" Hayefaker stuff.

chambers being small for HW is ok, but he's gotta use his legs more.
