That was Tony Perez reffing that fight.

He also let Ray Mancini take one too many punches against Alexis Arguello.
    Slow-movin' bastard, or a sadist....

Considering that the finishing flurry by Arguello pretty much came out of nowhere and consisted of only a few punches in a couple of short seconds (a left hook, right uppercut, left hook, left hook, and straight right that dropped Mancini), I'm not so sure that Perez was overly late in stopping that one...Maybe that final right hand by Arguello on the defenseless Mancini could've been prevented by Perez (who seemed out of position at the time), but I've seen plenty worse from some refs as far as late stoppages go.

...Yep, Ray was already done and heading down when Alexis nailed him with another big shot.

...Actually, now that I see it(Mancini/Alexis) again I'm not so sure it was that late. Funny how the memory plays tricks.

The Norton/Cooney finish with Norton being pummeled on the ropes reminded me of Mercer knocking the **** out of Morrison against the ropes only not as bad, that was a late stoppage and Perez just happened to be the ref in that too

The thing that sucks for Norton is the ***** ass ref is afraid to protect the fighter. If you watch the ref he sorta sticks his hand inbetween them but leans away...

I remember this Knockkout well. Norton had no business in the ring anymore. Fortunately for him as stated he didnt get injured.

Like Bozo stated, I too have tons of fights but no time to convert them. I probably could post millions of fights but It will be some time. I simply have no more time to spend converting my old VCR tapes. I even have some old beta-max tapes of the original fights telecast in the late 70's /early 80's that I got from my dad. (Too bad I have not been able to find a beta-max to convert them. I am sure by now they are distorted anyway.

Yeah he was definitely afraid of being hit, Cooney knew he was out though, and he was still throwing bombs. Norton definitely could have been seriously hurt because of that.

Norton had no business fighting anymore, much less against Cooney. His style was all wrong for Cooney, a tall more or less stand up fighter with a punch against Norton and his crouch.
