Comments Thread For: Ricardo Williams: Ten Years Later, The Journey Continues

By Keith Idec - Ricardo Williams doesn’t think it’s too late to become the fighter he was supposed to be.

Ten years have passed since promoter Lou DiBella believed enough in his talent to give Williams a $1.4 million signing bonus. He still hasn’t beaten a top 10 contender, much less won a world title. And the former Olympic silver medalist has since spent more months in prison than he has in The Ring magazine’s rankings.

But Williams is still just 29, young enough, he believes, to make it all right.

“My biggest problem has been matching my conditioning with my talent,” Williams said. “If I can get my conditioning to match my talent, the sky’s the limit.”

Williams’ lack of conditioning was the primary reason DiBella released him from his contract nearly eight years ago. The fact that the Cincinnati native is still saying such things about getting in proper shape surely will make doubters dismiss Williams’ ability to become a real player at welterweight in 2011, but all Williams wanted was a chance. No offense to Ricardo but I have never been more wrong on a fighter than him.

I actually thought he could end up being better than Mosley as well as his Olympic teammates Jermaine Taylor and Miguel Cotto.

There was nothing physically wrong with this kid, but his heart/dedication and overal desire wasn't into this sport. Then, like a dumb@ss he gets busted for drug trafficking (IIRC) and gets sent to prison.

Ohh well, I wish him the best of luck and hopefully he can turn his career around.

Prison puts a hunger in a man that can't be matched those are the words of Benard Hopkins and we witnesses what his career became after prison even Mike Tyson became world champ after prison and we all watched Michael Vick this year so my prediction is in 3 years he is on a big pay per view! Good luck Ricardo nothing like a good comeback story!

This kid was supposed to be a can't-miss prospect. It's a shame he didn't have the desire or dedication to make the most of his skills.

But he's getting one more chance, I hope he doesn't piss it away again.

I was not wrong about Williams. I never saw it in him. I was wrong about Bojado. I thought fur sure he would be a star.
