  • Mayweather Vs. Cotto Was the Best Super Fight Of The Last 10 Years!!!!

Something that I haven't really heard people talk about since Saturday night is that this was the best 'Super Fight' since DLH Vs. Vargas(935k buys). I think right under or anything above 1 million is whats considered a super fight.

If you think about it we've had a lot of big fights since then and a lot of great fights but none of the 'Super Fights' have been this good with this many eyeballs watching the event.

Lets take a look at the big fights(900k and above) on PPV since 9-14-2002.

DLH Vs. Mosley 2(950k buys) - fight was very anti climactic because people expected a repeat of the first fight, not only was the fight a bit of a stinker but the decision was very controversial.

    DLH Vs. Hopkins
(1 million buys) - The fight honestly didn't have much action and the ending wasn't very satisfying unless you were a big DLH hater or big Hopkins fan.

    DLH Vs. Mayorga
(935k buys) - Although one sided it was exciting because the build up of Mayorga basically calling DLH a *******ual and DLH getting his retribution in the ring.

    DLH Vs. Mayweather
(2.4 million buys) - The fight wasn't that bad but Floyd fought a safety first fight and DLH gassed. The casuals weren't happy, although it didn't hurt boxing because there wasn't any bad controversy, the fight wasn't anything to write home about.

Mayweather Vs. Hatton(920k buys) - This fight was pretty good but Cortez overstepped his duties and basically ruined what could have been a much more memorable night. Overall the fight was positive for the sport but was overshadowed by that fat sea turtle Cortez.

DLH Vs. Pacquiao (1.25 million buys) - The fight had drama because the guy who was supposed to be a sacrificial lamb destroyed the old butcher who couldn't pull the trigger. Positive for the sport but not very competitive.

Pacquiao Vs. Hatton(850k ppv buys) - This fight falls a little under the 'Super Fight" buy rates but we'll throw it in. It was a decent fight for about 1 minute 30 until Pacquiao started to decimate Hatton. Overall it was positive for the sport, you can't go wrong with a great KO like that but not very competitive and way too short.

    Mayweather vs. Marquez
(1.1 million buys) - Two counter punchers and one is bigger faster and better. It was a comeback fight for Floyd so that was good for the sport but it wasn't very competitive and there's wasn't a whole lot of action.

Pacquiao Vs. Cotto(1.25 million buys) - This was an action packed fight for the first 4-5 rounds, it had the potential to be great but Cotto became weary of the speed and power and was basically in survival mode for the rest of the fight. It was a positive fight for boxing but fizzled midway, still a good fight.

    Mayweather Vs. Mosley
(1.4 million buys) - The drama for this fight lasted about 3 rounds, Shane caught Floyd with two right hands but after that it was the same pattern round after round of Shane being tentative and Floyd picking him apart. Good first 3-4 rounds but very repetitive for the last 8 or so rounds.

    Margarito Vs. Pacquiao
(1.15 million PPV buys) - Margarito coming forward without much head movement while Pacquiao machine guns his face with combinations. It had it's moments like Manny is briefly hurt to the body, other than that it's a pretty one sided beating. Overall it's a positive for the sport but not competitive.

Pacquiao Vs. Mosley(1.??million buys) - Numbers vary for this fight not sure the exact buy rate. This fight was a real disappointment, Mosley gets dropped early and goes straight into survival mode. Pacquiao has leg cramps and can't catch up to Mosley so it makes for a very boring and predicable cat and mouse game. The crowd Boo's a Pacquiao fight for the first time I can remember, not a good night for boxing imo.

    Mayweather Vs. Ortiz
(1.25 million buys) - The fight is very exciting for the 4 rounds it goes on, head butt, legal sucker punch. Fight is over, good 4 rounds Floyd stood his ground but the controversial ending robbed the public of at least another couple rounds of PPV value. Overall the ending created a lot of buzz also the post fight interview, good for the sport imo.

Pacquiao Vs. Marquez(1.4 million buys) - This was the least action packed fight of the trilogy, Manny was very tentative after being countered and Marquez waited for his counters without leading too much. A lot of people thought the wrong guy got the decision so it made for a controversial and uninspiring fight.

And now we get to Mayweather Vs. Cotto(PPV buys????) - Mayweather starts strong almost like he wants to prove that he's the superior fighter with the faster hands, Cotto eats good hard shots early but isn't deterred. In the middle rounds Cotto starts trapping Mayweather on the ropes and unloading hard body shots and landing hard stiff jabs. Mayweather's nose is bloody for the first time since the Burton/Augustus fight?? Every round has something going on, not a lot of holding or posing by either fighter. Both fighters fight their hearts out until the end when Cotto almost goes down in the 12th round. Both fighters know they have been in a fight and embrace with respect in the end.

    So there you have it.

Mayweather Vs. Cotto is the best super fight of the last 10 years, if only all these million+ buy fights were this good. the PPV numbers would probably be closer to 3 million each time out.

Lets face it, the super fights for the most part end up being duds.

Cong**** if you read all that text.

        • Pacquiao-JMM was better.

          • Pacquiao quicker, has a better left, and right hand, bigger puncher, better footwork, throws better combos and more of them, better chin, higher work rate, better stamina.

Hmmm. doesn't take a genius to work out that Pacquiao is a tougher fight for Floyd than Cotto much much tougher.

Floyd looks like it is time for another vacation.

2-manny and cotto fight nothing alike, manny is not a great body puncher not is he as big as cotto

3=cotto said in 2008 he was not pursuing floyd so drop that ducking crap

4-it was a great fight but floyd clearly won

The difference in Cotto fighting without being drained and being allowed normal rehydration is startling. ANyone who still says 145 didn't affect cotto's performance is just ******.
