When I watch the super talented Berto fight I see glimpses of greatness. He is a young strong fast and athletic boxer. So what's the problem you ask? The lack of comp he faces. Berto a 27 year old resident of Winter Haven, Florida has won all of his 27 pro bouts 21 by knockout. Im not hear to question Bertos talent, but his lack of a big name opponent is hurting his star power. I give him credit for accepting the challenge to face Shane Mosley in January of 2010 but the fight fell through do to the terrible incident that took place in Haiti.
Since winning the vacant WBC welterweight crown over Miguel Rodriguez in June of 2008, Andre Berto has defended the crown 5 times. He defeated Steve Forbes, Luis Collazo, Juan Urango, Carlos Quintana and recently Freddy Hernandez.I think the two wins over Collazo and Quintana were credible victories. Andre Berto HAS to fight a big name in 2011 no ifs ands or buts about it. He needs a Cotto, Mayweather or Manny on his resume or maybe a top light welterweight like Khan or Judah. As we speak Team Berto is trying to work out a deal with Victor Ortiz at welterweight. Berto and his team have done a excellent job of getting him million dollar paydays on premium cable fighting less then stellar comp. I'm not upset with Berto the businessman but I'm a little upset with Berto the fighter. Will Berto ever be the "MAN"?
