Almost all fighters are cherrypickers at some point. Once they reach the top or are on they're way It just makes good business sence to avoid dangerous fights that would/could derail their chances at the next big money fight.
Having said that some recent fighters have honorably taken the tough fights to establish their names and reputations and deserve some mention.
Cotto gets an B+
I feel that when Cotto was coming up he truly believed in himself and took all fights. The Margarito beatdown appears to changed him some as he now looks to be a little more choosy about his opponents north of 147. He's always been a delight to see fight but just not as crisp as he once was.
Oscar De La Hoya B-
Same with Oscar as Cotto. Pretty much took all comes until he was trying to stay on top.... However, there were some pretty good fighter like Winky Wright, Margarito that he could of fought but really didn't have to because they weren't at his marketablity level. Kudos to Oscar for fighting Trinidad because that's the fight that everybody wanted to see. Oscar became an expert cherry picker later in his career fighting lesser fighters like Steve Forbes and Felix Strum really just to showcase himself.
Mosely A-
Shane really should get huge credit because as I see it he took every fight he could regardless of danger level, had some big wins and some losses and now that hes not trying to defend a perfect record and trying to stay in the top 5 fighters he's got something to prove. Although he hasn't performed his best in some of the big fights hes surprised us in others. He's made a real name for himself and still deserves to get big fights.
Juan Manuel Marquez A+
What can you say about this guy a wonderful fighter, can't really look good against him so he has to constantly politic for the big names. A true hall of famer.
Mayweather C-
Has carefully picked his fights from his first fight until today. Would have to say his bravest fights were Hatton, Mosely and De La Hoya that he handled all easily. More interested in keeping his O losses than proving that he will take all comers. I firmly believe that he avoids rough fights where hes forced to fight anything outside of a boxing match. Will truly never get the credit that his potential deserves. Even if Floyd had 3 losses on his record I would still respect him more for seeing him in brawls with the likes of Cotto, Margarito and Pacman.
Oh yeah Pacquaio.. A+
He's entitled to sit back and let the fights come to him at this point.... He not only took all fights he fought bigger fighters. Anybody that thinks he's avoiding PFB is mislead. As soon as Floyd makes that fight it will happen. And as far as people saying hes dodging Martinez... Give me a break.. He can't go up in weight anymore... They expect him to fight Klitchko next??? Fight fans seem to either love Manny or hate him but all should respect what he has done for the sport.
It's Mayweathers move. Has to respond to the fans and stop waiting for someone to beat Manny so he can claim "That's not where the money is"
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr F
A fabricated fighter.. Lets see him with a top 10 fighter......
Just my opinion........
