Boxing - Former welterweight champion Joshua "the Grandmaster" Clottey (35-4) of Ghana will return to the ring in a light middleweight bout against Calvin Green (21-5-1) of Texas on March 12 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Both Clottey and Green are 33 years of age, and the 154 lb. non-title matchup will be an undercard fight promoted by Las Vegas-based Top Rank.
The main event of "Relentless" will feature Miguel Cotto (35-2) of Puerto Rico against Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1) of Nicaragua for the WBA light middleweight title. The pay-per-view bout will be telecast by Showtime.
Clottey last fought in March 2010 in a unanimous decision loss to pound-for-pound king Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao (52-3-2) of the Philippines. The Ghanaian boxer earned the largest purse of his career against Pacquiao, but was criticized for what many considered to be an overly-cautious performance in front of over 50,000 fans at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
Pacquiao hurled a career record high of 1231 punches against Clottey, landing 20 percent of his blows. Clottey threw a total of only 399 punches (landing 27 percent), according to CompuBox. Clottey blamed his poor performance to not feeling well during the day of the fight, apparently due to an ill-prepared okra soup.
Clottey's upcoming fight with Calvin Green will be his first at light middleweight, and may answer whether the African - at this stage of his career - has any further desire to be considered as one of the elite fighters in the sport. Green lost his last fight to Sergio Mora in April 2010.
