Comments Thread For: Ricardo Mayorga is Still Doing The Money Dance

By Cliff Rold - Since a December 2003 Welterweight unification defeat, he’s averaged exactly one fight per year. He lost three of them by knockout. Those three losses came at the hands of the three of the biggest names of the last decade at Welterweight and Jr. Middleweight: Oscar De La Hoya, Shane Mosley, and Felix Trinidad.

Of those three, only the Mosley fight did not end up a financial bonanza. It was not surprising; Mosley as an “A-side” to a promotion has rarely shaken the box office to its knees.

Put former lineal World Welterweight Champion and Jr. Middleweight titlist Ricardo Mayorga (29-7-1, 23 KO) with a proven draw though and watch out.

At least, that must be what Bob Arum’s Top Rank promotional outfit is hoping for.

How else to explain one of the most unexpected matches made for the first half of 2011? Having fought only once in 2010, and that in June against feather-fisted Yuri Foreman, the man who stands as arguably the biggest U.S. draw outside of Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather will return from a nine-month absence from the ring for Mayorga? Miguel Cotto (35-2, 28 KO) couldn’t do better than this? [Click Here To Read More]

I can't help but think this is a yes, Cotto can still beat a puncher fight.

After two good but not heavy handed fighters, this seems like the safest bet for a payday with a dose of danger for Cotto.

Mayorga is just collecting a check, and he could possibly get lucky early.

    No lose for him.

    Seems carefully crafted for Cotto.

Mayorga can punch? Name one top fighter that Mayorga has stopped above 147? Matter of fact name me a the last fight of note at any weight-class that Mayorga has stopped?

This is considered a tune up man, they picked Mayorga cuz' it suppose to be easy but with a name and get Cotto ready for Margarito.

Lets not try to make this fight tougher than what it is.

            j-rose.

I called it, set it up, and you knocked it out of the park.

You know what this fight is all about.

            Mayorga the feared puncher.

Living off Vernon Forrest for eternity.

Mayorga is heavy handed but he's not a KO puncher. He is not the type who you will always consider dangerous at anytime of the fight. He just not that kind of puncher.

If he was, he would of had a more successful career. Really a KO win over Forrest like 9yrs ago is the last KO over a top opponent that he has scored. And, like you said he will live off that one lone win for the rest of his life. And, from what I remember I don't think he won the rematch with Forrest all that convincingly but granted it has been a long time since I seen the rematch. I might have to watch it again.

People criticizing young talents like Chavez and Canelo, yet Cotto fights this bum. Mayorga was an OK fighter but not anymore. Cotto is ridiculous.
